Hardcover. Zustand: Sehr gut. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Leichtere Gebrauchsspuren. 1. Auflage. In den WarenkorbHMS Gorgon was designed by Sir William Symonds and launched in 1837. Her direct-acting engines (in which the engine's cylinders are placed under the crankshaft), built by Seaward and Company, were the first to be fitted in any vessel. She was scrapped in 1864. 4pp., 4to. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged and worn, but with the signature torn away. Addressed, with seal in black wax, to 'Benjamin Sharpe Esq | 19, Fleet Street, | London' (Sharpe's father had been resident partner at that address in the banking firm of Gosling & Sharpe. The first paragraph reads: 'Dear Sharpe, | I have just returned from the Gorgon, and my visit to her has verified the substance of our Conversation on Thursday last. | Her present armament consists of 4 32-pounder (bored) guns & 2 84-pounders (10-inch) on the weather deck. if properly armed she would also carry 12 32-pounders on the main-deck, but she is deficient in these. Her draft of water is about 15th. & 15 . 6 which, I believe, is what she ought to draw if her armament were complete, with the full compliment of men, water, provisions, munitions &c.' The letter continues with detailed criticism, with reference to a trail 'in the river in July last, with Ld Minto & other lords of the Admiralty on bd', the fact that 'her displacement had been sadly miscalculated',an incident on the coast of Spain, her engines and paddle-boards. 'To judge of Gorgon, whether she be a failure or otherwise, she should be tried as an armed vessel, carrying 16 32-pounders & 2 swivel guns [.] We have no more money that we know what to do with - no more workmen than we to keep pace with our wants in the shipwright department - & yet we are sacrificing both to the vain endeavours of adventurers in naval architecture, while there are plenty of persons in the service who might be advantageously employed in preventing the occurrence of these & other discreditable blunders if it were not the fashion to prefer speculative notions to the plain & unerring principles of the of naval Construction'.

Text: "A line to acknowledge your stirring poem on the loss of the Titanic which I admire much. | I suppose & hope that the story of the band is true, but it requires some corroboration. | May I make one criticism - Why 'tinselled' heroes- There is something in the pomp & circumstance of war no doubt, but leaders in a forlorn hope are heroes all the same; and mere passive resignation to death in which the Chinese would surpass us is not so superior to the courage which induces a man to 'seek the bubble reputation e'en at the cannon's mouth' as you would put it- Excuse the criticism-". Note: I haven't managed to find a Poem about the sinking of the Titanic with the word "tinselled" in it.

In den WarenkorbFrom around 1913 the recipient of these two documents elected to go by the name of Ralph Tindal. On the outbreak of the Great War he was appointed captain of the destroyer Electra, and in 1917 was made captain of the torpedo gunboat Circe. Thereafter he worked with paddle minesweepers, retiring with the rank of Commander in 1921. He was the father of RAF Group Captain Nicholas Tindal-Carill-Worsley (1911-2006), one of the planners of the celebrated Great Escape from Stalag Luft III. The National Maritime Museum contains a collection of 'Documents relating to the Naval Cadetship of Charles N, and Ralph Tindal Carill-Worsley. / Examinations, correspondence and printed documents' (MSS/76/080). Two documents, in Admiralty 'On Her Majesty's Service' envelope, with frank dated 24 December 1895 and Admiralty anchor stamp, addressed to 'Mr. R. In den WarenkorbThe problem with which the thesis deals is summed up at the start: 'If war broke out in the near future, attack by atomic bombers would become an immediate possibility, and one of the biggest problems would be the defence of this Island, which, with its areas of dense population, particularly around its essential industries, would present many ideal targets to the enemy. It would, therefore, be essential to destroy, or attempt to destroy, each enemy bomber before it reached the coast. [.] In the immediate future [.] our first line of defence against enemy bombers must remain the pilot-manned interceptor-fighter, [.]'. The thesis consists of [7] + 65pp., folio, followed by 71 'figures' (many on graph paper) on a further 70 leaves, 68 of them folio and the other two larger fold-outs. In grey card folder, printed with the Cranfield crest and details, and with the title and date in manuscript. The word 'SECRET' in manuscript at heads of both the cover of the folder and the title-page. In fair condition, with light signs of age and wear, and the seven preliminary leaves somewhat creased and chipped. The seven pages preceding the text include a dedication page ('fama nihil est celerius'), lists of contents and illustrations, and full-page summary. The final page carries a list of references. There are also two pages of 'Notation'. The summary reads: 'The turning performance and manoeuvrability of aircraft at supersonic speeds has been investigated in order that the problems of aircraft interception at these speeds may be more easily understood. The range of investigation has been restricted to Mach numbers between 1.0 and 2.0, and to altitudes between 36,000 ft. and 50,000 ft. | A study of the manoeuvres likely to be undertaken by an interceptor-fighter when closing in to attack an enemy bomber flying at a Mach number of 0.9 indicates that, generally, only a small speed margin over the bomber is desirable in the turns, in order to keep the penetration of the bomber to a minimum and to avoid excessive normal acceleration on the fighter. But it is shown that at these low supersonic Mach numbers, 1.0 to 1.2, the minimum turning radius in the stratosphere may be limited by the maximum usable lift coefficient available, or by insufficient thrust to overcome the increased drag in the turn. Reheat considerably increases in manoeuvrability, and is considered to be essential for any interceptor-fighter of the immediate future designed to operate at these speeds and altitudes.' The only work by Langley listed on Copac is another College of Aeronautics production, co-written in 1953 with C. F. Bethwaite, and titled 'Note on research into some aspects of stall warning devices'. By 1962 Langley was a Lieutenant Commander, and having completed his appointment at the Escuela de Guerra Naval, Madrid, has been appointed Head of the Air Engineering Department, Royal Naval Engineering College, Manadon, Plymouth.
