Robinson). All essays show the same publisher and copyright on the title pages. Various degrees of foxing is present throughout but binding is securing for the text pages. Front hinge is cracked and rear hinge is starting. This book contains seven different essays by various authors, with the full titles being as follows: "The Constitution Of Man Considered In Relation To External Objects" (61 pp.) by George Combe / "Essays In A Series Of Letters, On The Following Subjects: On A Man's Writing Memoirs Of Himself. According to Tooley both Thomas Rowlandson and I.R. Cruikshank are credited with the designs for the plates, the balance of opinio…n favouring Cruikshank. One of the plates however is signed 'Williams'. Rebacked in mauve cloth with paper title label. Boards marked and have wear and bumping to corners. Page edges untrimmed. Slight rippling to margins. Complete with the engraved title page and 19 plates, all hand coloured. Some offsetting from plates to facing page. Slight marking to pages 157-164 where a flower was previously pressed between the pages. A few spots of light foxing, text is generally very clean. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown endpaper (Lawrence Stangman). Contemporary owner's name to front free endpaper and upper margin of p1 (Ninian Crawford). A rare uncut example. Tooley 434; Lowndes p2564. . Overall condition is Very Good Minus. Size: 6.75 x 10.25 inches (17 x 26 cm). Hardback. Printed pages: 8vo. iv, [2] (list of plates), 319.

This 9th edition is the last version of Combe's most successful work, a brief version of which first appeared in 1826, he died in the early stages of preparing this edition and the editors incorporated changes to Preface and Introductory Remarks, along with making other slight changes for the sake of consistency with these or as otherwise required. Best remembered as an advocate of Phrenology, this topic figures relatively little in this work. Apparently very scarce. Despite faults a quite acceptable copy in original binding and not of institutional provenance. Note: quoted shipping rates are calculated for 500-700 gram net weight, cost will be modified up or down as appropriate outside this range. Size: 13 Cm x 19.5 Cm.
