Soft cover. Zustand: New. Ypres has been one of the chief centres of the terrible struggle which is now proceeding on the Continent, and it is well known that this same old Flemish town has figured again and again in the bloody contests of the past. Ypres was probably the centre of the most terrible fighting in the War. This del…ightful old Flemish town, with its magnificent cathedral and its unique Cloth Hall, probably the finest specimen of Gothic architecture in Europe, was wantonly bombarded day and night. The Germans have failed to capture the old city; but they have laid it in ruins. The heroism, the self-devotion, the religious faith, the Christian zeal and charity of those Irish nuns at Ypres, in a terrible crisis in the history of their Order, command universal respect and admiration, mingled with pity for their fate, and an earnest desire, among all generous souls, to help them in retrieving their fortunes.

In den WarenkorbHardback. Zustand: Very Good. Third impression (Second edition). 1915. Third impression (Second edition). xxvii, 198pp., a frontispiece and 2 other black and white illustrations, and a 2 page catalogue at the end of the book. The Benedictine order first established a community of Irish nuns in Ypres in the 17th century. The Abbe…y of Our Lady of Grace, in Rue St Jacques, attracted the daughters of wealthy Irish families in the centuries that followed. In August 1914, their tranquility was shattered when Germany invaded Belgium and Allied and German troops began a series of battles at Ypres. The nuns, known as the Irish Dames of Ypres, remained for a few weeks as the town and abbey was destroyed by shellfire. They eventually decided to flee to safety, first to England, and eventually Ireland. With the help of the British army, they managed to leave Belgium and cross the English Channel by the end of 1914 and went to recuperate at Oulton Abbey in Staffordshire. In spring 1915, sympathisers arranged for this book about their plight to be published. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with yellow titling on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling on the boards. The spine is noticeably faded and the titling on the spine is now indistinct. The spine ends are lightly bumped. The contents are tight and clean with light foxing on the endpapers and a few light foxing marks on the title page and fore edge of the text block. There are light traces of the top edge of a removed bookplate or prize label on the front free endpaper but no inscription.
