Reprint of a rare 1885 report of a mission to Sikkim and the frontier of Tibet. The original was a report marked as "Confidential". Macauley was to discuss the administration of his state with th…e Maharaja of Sikkim, check the Lachen valley route through Sikkim, especially to evaluate, whether it is suitable for trade with Tibet and to establish "friendly relations" with the administration ot the Panchen Lama in Southern Tibet. Macaulay was i.a. accompanied by the famous pandits Sarat Chandra Das and Ugyan Gyatso, who had accompanied Das during his two Tibet journeys. The report includes a copy of Macaulay`s diary form 20 October to 17 November 1884. The mission was one of the reasons for the first war between Tibet and Great Britain, which led to the "Sikkim Expedition" of 1888. Some of the earliest photographs of the region. The original is scarce, having been published in an edition of 100 only. We find copies in institutions only at the Universities of Glasgow and Oxford, and a copy at Kew. A copy from Franklin Brooke-Hitching`s library was sold by Sotheby`s in 2015 for GBP 11.875; another copy was already sold in 1993 by Christies for GBP 5,500. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
