Octavo, three of nine original volumes bound in three quarters morocco, gilt ruling to the spine in six compartments within raised bands, morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of Shakespeare engraved from the Folio edition o…f 1623. Mixed editions. In good condition. Uncommon. The works of William Shakespeare enjoyed a renewed popularity in 18th-century England. Several new editions of his works were published, his plays were revived in the theater and numerous works of art were created illustrating the plays and specific productions of them. Capitalizing on this interest, English publisher John Boydell undertook a large and elaborate Shakespeare venture that included the establishment of the Boydell Shakespeare Gallery and the production of a grand illustrated edition of Shakespeare's plays showcasing the talents of British painters and engravers. He chose the noted scholar and Shakespeare editor George Steevens to oversee the edition which became the focus of the enterprise. Boydell spared no expense in the production of the set. He hired typography experts William Bulmer and William Martin to develop and cut a new typeface specifically for the edition and sought out the most eminent painters and engravers of the day to contribute 96 engravings to the folios.

Overall a very nice set. "John Payne Collier is chiefly known as a Shakespearean critic and later forger, but his interest began with rather more general early English drama; his early publications included Five Old Plays and A history of English Dramatic Poetry and Annals of the Stage. He also edited the papers of Edward Alleyn, actor and later founder of Dulwich College, for the Shakespeare Society, and was employed by the 6th Duke of Devonshire as Librarian. He represented the Duke at the prolonged sale (1834-6) of the collection of the great bibliophile and book collector Richard Heber, and became a member of the Garrick Club and the Society of Antiquaries under his aegis. In den WarenkorbRare eighteenth century plan of Eton Etching with engraving. The first state of a rare and charming map of Windsor showing Eton College. Although neglected by the early Hanoverian monarchs, Windsor Castle had become a popular tourist attraction by the early 1740s, thanks both to the castle's collection of curiosities and the car…e taken of Windsor Great Park by the Duke of Cumberland. There is an inset at the upper left corner showing the east prospect of the castle, before George III began a programme of renovation when he took the throne. The inset at the upper right shows the garden designed by Henry Wise during the reign of Anne, the last Stuart monarch. A note on the map itself explains that the design was never executed, but plans have been made to do so. The key to the right shows the principal architectural features of the school and the castle. The engraver, John Pine (1690-1756) was an important figure in eighteenth century British art. He was a friend and collaborator of Willam Hogarth; he engraved John Rocque's monumental map of London; and, with Hogarth and George Virtue, he managed to secure early legislation for artists' copyrights. The map is dedicated to Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough; the cartouche is decorated with his arms. Marlborough was educated at Eton, and had recently distinguished himself in the War of the Austrian Succession. There are five institutional copies held in Eton College Library, the British Library, Princeton University Library, Museo Naval de Madrid, and in the Royal Collection.
