Serie di 25 incisioni originali, firmate nella parte inferiore del rame "Adr. Collaert fecit et exc."  numerate 1-25 in basso a sinistra ed 1 titolo allegorico non numerato.Prima edizione di questa famosa raccolta d'incisioni di pesci,  balene, tartarughe, testuggini, molluschi, crostacei e coccodrilli.  Adriaen Collaert raggruppa la fauna marina in gruppi simili, fornendo a ciascun elemento il suo nome scientifico. Il paesaggio sullo sfondo è tratto dalle vedute montuose e dagli edifici dipinti da Pieter Brueghel il Vecchio. Le conchiglie sparse in primo piano non sono identificate con un nome, nonostante siano fedelmente riprodotte svolgono un ruolo meramente decorativo. Alla fine del XVI secolo, la storia naturale era basata sull'osservazione diretta e la rappresentazione della natura svolgeva un ruolo essenziale nello sviluppo del metodo scientifico. Collaert, Adrian (1560-1618)nato ad Anversa da una famiglia di incisori fiamminghi. Figlio di Hans (o Jan) Collaert I, sposato con Justa figlia del noto incisore ed editore di Anversa Philips Galle, divenne un abile e assiduo collaboratore del suocero. Nel 1580 entra a far parte della Gilda di San Luca. Collaert realizzò circa 600 incisioni, compresa una serie ispirata ai suoi stessi disegni di animali e  di molte incisioni derivate  da Stradano, Goltzius, Martin de Vos e Pieter de Jode.  Primo stato, prima dell'indirizzo, buon esemplare sebbene non privo di antichi restauri nei margini bianchi, soprattutto al foglio di titolo. Vellum a little grubby and with a couple of small ink stains, corners slightly bumped, tiny chips gone at spine ends, a couple of quires a bit proud, but the binding solid and retaining much of its original antique appeal. Occasional minor soiling internally, isolated spots of foxing or trivial paper flaws, but the text and plates otherwise very appealing, the impressions of the engravings being especially rich. Written by a Walloon theologian and illustrated by an Antwerp master printer, this is a very rare treatise on martyrs of the Augustinian order that was once in the library of an order of teaching nuns. These 27 hagiographies of Augustinian hermits who died for the faith were written by theologian Georges Maigret (1573-1633), prior of the Augustinian monastery in Li?ge. He begins with St. Evode, martyred in Africa in 408, and continues up to 1610, when Blessed Illephonse and Raphael de la Madre de Dios were killed while on missions in the Philippines and Sunda Islands, respectively. Other near-contemporary martyrs died closer to home, like Brother Gerard Ridder, who was murdered by the Huguenots in the Low Countries in 1587. A full-length portrait by Adriaen Collaert illustrates the entry for each martyr, with detailed background scenery giving a sense of where these Augustinians were serving at the time of their demise. Some martyrs are shown in the midst of their execution: Boniface hangs on an X-shaped cross, Philippe Aymil stands pierced through with arrows, Augustin du Rosaire kneels calmly before the swordsman who will behead him. The death of others is represented allegorically, as in the case of Jean Sahagoune, who was poisoned: he is depicted standing atop a recumbent lion, while a richly dressed woman offers him a chalice containing a snake. Collaert (ca. 1560-1618) came from a family of prominent Flemish engravers in Antwerp. After training with his father Hans, he became a master of the artists' Guild of St. Luke in 1580. Our volume was once owned by the Congregation of Notre Dame in Trier, an order of Augustinian Canonesses dedicated to educating the daughters of the poor. The order was founded in northeastern France in 1597, and soon spread to surrounding areas. Of special interest, the printing of our volume was authorized by the signature of Jean Chapeauville, vicar general of Liege and Inquisitor of the Faith. As a reformer, historian, and theologian, Chapeauville (1551-1617) was a person of considerable prominence in the church of his time. To qualify for personal manuscript authorization like this, the work must have had quite a small print run, and copies would have additionally been destroyed through devout use. In any case, the book is almost never seen for sale today.

Il épouse en 1586 Justa Galle, la fille du graveur et éditeur Philippe Galle. Son activité se déroule à Anvers entre 1580 et 1618. Il devient franc-maître de la guilde de Saint-Luc en 1580. Adriaen Collaert dessine et grave des scènes de tradition chrétienne et de dévotion. Les deux frères Collaert associent leurs ateliers à celui de Philippe Galle et leur production commune ne permet pas toujours de bien les distinguer. Adriaen signe en général ses travaux Adrian. A lovely engraving from the series Vita Christi / The Life of Christ after Maarten de Vos. This is plate 5. Good, clean, strong engraving, would appear to be an early impression from the block. Lettered below left "M. de Vos inven / Adria. Collaert sculp" and at right "Sadler excu". In the margin two lines of Latin "Enthea. montis" and "Matth. 7.". Numbered upper centre "V." Held in an archival pouch and under a large passepartout (50cm x 40cm), with just a touch of marking to it. From a series of twelve plates engraved by Adriaen Collaert (1560-1618) and Raphael Sadeler (New Hollstein 238-247). After Maarten de Vos (Flemish, 15321603). This conforms exactly with the British Museum ref: 1910,0208.22 and we have taken the dating from there. .

A very rare complete set (only the second known to survive) of a print series of the five senses, attributed to the Antwerp artist-engraver Adriaen Collaert (ca. 1560-1618), printed on vellum, beautifully coloured with gouaches and extensively highlighted with gold. Each print shows an oval three-quarter-length portrait of a seated female figure, richly dressed. The series has no printed title, but the title of each print is engraved below the oval: "VISVS." (sight), "GVSTVS." (taste), "TACTVS." (touch), "OLFACTVS." (smell) and "AVDITVS." (hearing). Each shows a situation that clearly alludes to the relevant sense, though in many cases one can also find secondary allusions. Some of the iconography is borrowed from Collaert's earlier and more common series on the five senses (New Hollstein 1367-1371) but the scenes are completely different. The prints are not numbered, but "Visus" must have been intended as the first, for only it has an imprint: "Ioan. Adr. Collaert excud", indicating that the series in its present only known state was published after Collaert's 1618 death by his son Jan Adriaensz. (Jan III) Collaert (1591-1628). The rich bright colouring and extensive gold highlighting in the present set adds to the already luxurious feel of the clothes, jewellery and furnishings. The vellum of the first print is slightly wrinkled and there is a small hole just outside its oval; each of the other four has a faint rectangular shadow above the figure's head (so affecting only open space or the oval border); some have tiny pin pricks or other very minor defects far outside the oval. Green silk (ca. 1820?) over flexible boards, sewn through 2 holes without supports. A complete series of 5 engraved prints on vellum (13 x 8.5 cm; oval image 10 x 7.5 cm) each illustrating one of the five senses with a female figure. Richly and very beautifully coloured by a contemporary hand, in colour gouaches (red, blue, purple and green), extensively highlighted with gold. Each print mounted on a paper leaf in a small album.
