[light dampstaining along rear joint (bleed-through from jacket stain), no other significant wear; the jacket is decent-looking on front and rear panels, but the spine is stained and discolored, with a small pull-tear]. (B&W photographs) "The first non-musical hit of the s…eason," reads the first jacket blurb -- so, of course, when Hollywood got around to it the first thing they thought was "hey, this thing could really use some songs!" Not a bad decision, though, since the resulting film managed to not only get past the censors (who were concerned because lovely young Gigi was, after all, "in training" to be a high-class courtesan) but also to take home the "Best Picture" Oscar for 1958. The novel was originally published in 1944, and had been filmed in France in 1948. The Broadway version made a star of Audrey Hepburn, who is featured in all three of the photographs in this edition (and on the paper label affixed to the front cover), but of course they hadda get a real French girl (Leslie Caron) for the movie. This was a review copy, and has the original publisher's slip laid in; from the collection of longtime New York Times film critic Bosley Crowther.

A young man starts a summer job at a lake resort, where he falls in love. Their situation is complicated by the tomboy who lives across the lake and his ex girlfrie…nd showing up. 9.5 x 13 inches. Very Good, with creasing along the right edge and at the top right corner as well as four small tears at the right edge, presumably from creasing.

Mimeo snipe, dated May 17, 1953, "International News Photos" and "Return to: Chronicle Files" stamps on verso. The International News Photos snipe addresses the movie as "New Wine." While we could not verify that working title, Rossellini an…d co-screenwriter Vitaliano Brancati had drawn on a script by Antonio Pietrangeli entitled "New Vine" for "Journey to Italy," and was likely an error by the news agency. Loosely based on the 1934 novel "Duo" by Colette. An English couple, Alex (George Sanders) and Katherine Joyce (Bergman), eight years married, travel to Italy to sell a villa inherited from Alex's uncle. Along the drive and during their stay at the villa they come to the realization they really don't know one another and have little desire to spend time together. Set in and shot on location in Naples and Rome, Italy. 7 x 9 inches. Near Fine. Godard, Histoire(s) du Cinema. BFI 540. Scorcese, My Voyage to Italy.
