In den WarenkorbHardback. Zustand: Good Only. W. S. Coleman [William Stephen Coleman] (illustrator). This new and illustrated edition of British Ferns and Their Allies by the celebrated botanist Thomas Moore, this copy in the very scarcely encountered original publisher's pictorial wraps. This is the 1862 new edition of the work, this edition being first published in 1859, which is an abridged version of Moore's Popular History of British Ferns, first published in 1851.Includes a frontispiece and eighteen pages of detailed monochrome plate illustrations to the rear of the work, in addition to several vignettes accompanying Moore's descriptions of the various species. All illustrations for the work were produced by the English painter and illustrator William Stephen Coleman. With eight pages of publisher's advertisements divided between the front and rear of the work.Bound in the original publisher's pictorial paper wraps.Very scarcely encountered bound in the original publisher's paper wraps thus.Thomas Moore was a specialist on ferns and fern allies in the British Isles who served as Curator to the Society of Apothecaries Garden from 1848 to 1887. Moore's occupation of this role coincided with what has been termed the Pteridomania or 'fern madness' of the Victorian era, a cultural and aesthetic obsession with ferns. As a result of his tenure, the number of fern species cultivated in the garden increased by fifty percent. British Ferns offers its reader a glimpse of Moore's vast botanical knowledge in a thorough, illustrated guide to the ferns found across the British Isles. Bound in the original publisher's paper wraps. Externally, some discolouration of the paper wraps, a small paper fragment to the rear board, and significant loss to the backstrip. Slight bumping to the extremities. Hinges almost failed. Internally, binding is strained. Pages are a trifle age toned however generally bright and clean barring just the odd spot or marginal handling mark, heaviest to the outer leaves. Good Only. book.
