Broadside with Royal coat of arms and the motto of the Order of the Garter printed at the top. Printed in two columns. Ragged at the right side and bottom, a couple of pin holes, marked "Dup" in pencil on the verso. Signed "R Baldwin Esq" on the top right side, presumably the signature of Robert Baldwin (1804-1858), the Canadian lawyer and politician who, with his political partner Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine, led the first responsible ministry in Canada. The Upper Canada Gazette, the official government paper, which began in 1793 (see Fleming, Upper Canadian Imprints 1801-1841, n110), issued a number of "Extraordinary" issues between 1799 and 1839. This "Extraordinary" issue is not recorded by itself as a separate publication, although copies may have been bound with runs of the newspaper. In this "Extraordinary", His Excellency "is pleased to Prorogue the present Session" with a speech to the Legislative Council and the House of Assembly pertaining to the "improvement of Public Schools, and the measures that should be adopted to ensure good Roads ad safe Bridges throughout the Province." Field Marshal John Colborne, 1st Baron Seaton (1778-1863) was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada in August 1828. In January 1836, he became commander-in-chief of all the armed forces in British North America. He left Canada in October 1839 after the arrival of his successor, Charles Poulett.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 376 p. 23 cm. Quarter brown cloth with grey paper boards. Corners bumped, edges worn, tears in spine ends and in upper part of front hinge. Foxing is mainly to first and last pages. The trials took place under orders from Sir John Colborne, commander-in-chief of Her Majesty's Forces in Canada and Lower Canada during the Rebellion. 108 men were prosecuted before the general court-martial of Montreal in 1838-1839. The trials occurred between December 6, 1838 and 1 May 1839. Nine were acquitted and 99 sentenced to death. 12 patriots were hanged in public between December 1838 and February 1839. 58 of the 99 who were initially condemned to death saw their sentence commuted into deportation to Australia on September 27, 1839. (Pardoned in 1843, they returned home in 1845.) 29 were freed under bail or condition.…
