In den WarenkorbAccording to his long obituary in The Times, 13 June 1929 ('Central Asian Politics'), Yates's 'studies of the affairs of the Indian borderland, Central Asia, and the Middle East were probably excelled by few retired officers of the Indian Army in wealth of detail and personal knowledge of events and personalities spread over the last half-century'. See also his long entry in Who Was Who. The three items are in fair condition, on aged and worn paper with rusting from paperclip. They carry the stamp and docketing of the Society. The card - signed 'A. C. Yate (Lt. Col.)' - concerns 'the corrected proof of my lecture on "The Indian Army"'. Both letters (totalling 3pp., 12mo) concern the manuscript of a lecture he proposes giving - following 'a little discussion' at St John's Gate - on the work of the Indian branch of the Red Cross, as 'the Society of Arts meditate a lecture on the Ambulance Work of the War'. Accompanying the three items is a Typed Letter Signed (1p., 4to) to Wood from Major W. O. Prichard, Chief Secretary, The St. John Ambulance Association, 28 December 1916, on its St John's Gate letterhead, sending, at Yate's request, a copy of the annual report of the Indian Branch, which shows 'what wonderful work has been done by the representatives of the Association in India, both in connection with the war and among the civil population'.

In den WarenkorbIts Commercial and Military Importance, and Numerous Advantages to the British Emigrant. First edition. 2 vols. Two folding frontispiece maps, 14 plates (including 7 coloured, 6 being double-page). 8vo. A very good copy in the publisher's green cloth, spines gilt, a little rubbed, slightly shaken. [xii], 421, [1], [errata], [4ads]; 510, [2]pp. London, T. and W. Boone, James Campbell has provided a wonderful account of his travels through Ceylon. With it's hand-coloured plates and folding map it's an immensely satisfying mid-nineteenth century production. He gives notes on the topography, customs and habits, the political situation and speculates on the commercial and military importance of the island - no small surprise given he's writing in the wake of the Indian Mutiny. Bobins, 228; Czech (Asia), pp 42-43. .
