Priscilla Pardridge), a Broadway actress, who married Cohen in 1921. This novel, about an attempt to corner the Chicago commodities market through the Board of Trade, was inspired by Pardridge's family. Cohen also spend two decades writing for Hollywood, and Somerset Maugham gave Cohen full dramatic rights to OF HUMAN BONDAGE after Cohen achieved film immortality for Maugham and Bette Davis with Cohen's script for the 1934 film. Pardridge's family owned Chicago's Garrick Theater, and a department store. "In his two novels, SWEEPINGS (1926) and THE GREAT BEAR (1927), Lester Cohen traced the fictional histories of two brothers, Daniel Pardway, who built a great department store, and Thane Pardway, who sets out to be the Great Bear of the Chicago Board of Trade." - Andrews, CHICAGO IN STORY, p. 194.

Novel set in 1880s Chicago, about a wheat speculator and his domination of the Chicago Board of Trade, aka "The Pit" (also the subject of Frank Norris's classic 1903 novel of that title). The protagonist's brother, a powerful department store owner, had been the subject of the author's first novel, "Sweepings," published in 1926 and adapted twice for the movies during the 1930s, with Cohen himself doing a bit of screenwriting during that decade. Of "The Great Bear," the New York Times critic wrote that "as a dramatization -- or better still, a 'humanization' -- of American business, its force and content cannot be denied," despite its having been overwritten: "There are too many exclamation points [and] too much verbal hairiness to make it first-rate."
