Desert Hot Springs, Riverside County, California, was founded in 1940 by L.W. Coffee, its owner and subdivider. It was named for the many hot springs in the area, the largest collection of warm mineral springs in the United States, and is one of the few places in the world with naturally occurring hot- and cold mineral springs. In 1931 Coffee visited the W.B. Adelson homestead and recognized the potential for commercial development of the curative power of the hot springs. In 1939 he began laying out the streets and lots in the original Desert Hot Springs Cabin Sites tract. In 1940 the map was recorded and the name of the town became official. Dedication of the hot mineral water bath house and swimming pool was officially made July 12, 1941 with 2,000 people in attendance in a settlement with fewer than 20 residents. Desert Hot Springs eventually became a destination for the rich and famous who availed themselves of the relaxing and curative powers of the hot mineral springs.
