Unrecorded first edition of this programme printed for Buffalo Bill's arrival in Vienna in May 1890 - his very first visit to that city, and the first live exposure for most Viennese to the exotic peoples, costumes, and customs of the American West. - Cody's promotional material - such as the present, ephemerally-printed souvenir - probably helped to make him the most recognizable figure on the planet by the turn of the century. Giving detailed explanations of each act in the show and offering some background for Austrian audiences curious about the "Wild West", this 50-page programme captures the sensation of Cody's three-week stint in Vienna between 8 and 29 May 1890 (during which his troupe slept in giant tents erected on a field near the famous Prater). The preface here is dated Vienna, May 1890, and is signed by Nate Salsbury, Director: "The performances given by Buffalo Bill's Wild West have nothing in common with the ordinary tightrope walkers and equestrian performers, whose merit depends solely on skill acquired through practice. Our purpose is [instead] to acquaint the public with customs, tradition, and daily life of the inhabitants of the Far West of the United States through the representation of scenes and real experiences which occur there [.] After having won the acclaim of the press and the public at home, as well as in London, Paris, Barcelona, Naples, Rome, Milan, etc., we have the honour of introducing ourselves to the Viennese public today". Pages 53-56 contain testimonials by observers of his previous European engagements: a report from his performance at the Vatican on 3 March 1890; in Paris on 19 May 1890; and in Venice on 16 April 1890. Cody would only return to Vienna in May of 1906. - Although we have handled other programmes in Italian and French printed for Cody's European tours, we note that ephemera from his earliest European tours (1889-92) are extremely rare; nor have we ever encountered an example in German. The present work is wholly unrecorded in OCLC and KVK; the Buffalo Bill Center of the West holds no copy. - Spine chipped; edges slightly frayed, but a good survival of an unrecorded ephemeral item.

William Frederick Cody wuchs in der Nähe von Fort Leavenworth in Kansas auf. Seine Eltern hatten 1840 geheiratet und sich in Le Claire niedergelassen. Nach Martha, Julia und Samuel folgte der Sohn William, auf ihn noch Eliza, Helen, May und Charlie. Nach dem Tod des ältesten Sohns, der im Alter von zwölf Jahren nach einem Sturz gestorben war, verließ die Familie Le Claire und zog nach Salt Creek Valley. Als junger Mann nahm er am Goldrausch in Colorado teil.[1] Später arbeitete er beim Pony-Express[1] und anschließend als Scout für die Union sowohl im Amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg als auch in Kriegen gegen die Indianerstämme der Kiowa und Comanche in Kansas. Zwischen 1867 und 1868 versorgte er die Arbeiter der Kansas Pacific Railway mit Fleisch.[1] Hierbei tat er sich als sehr erfolgreicher Bisonjäger hervor und erhielt seinen Übernamen ?Buffalo Bill? Von 1868 bis 1872 beschäftigte ihn die US-Armee als Kundschafter (Scout). 1872 erhielt er als ziviler Scout der 3rd US Cavalry die Medal of Honor, den höchsten Tapferkeitsorden der USA. 24 Tage nach Buffalo Bills Tod, am 5. Februar 1917, wurde der Orden aberkannt, weil eine Verleihung an den Zivilisten William Cody nicht hätte erfolgen dürfen,[2] der gleiche Grund lag bei Mary Edwards Walker vor. Die US-Armee sprach 1989 Cody den Orden jedoch postum erneut zu.[3][4][5] 1876, nach der Schlacht am Little Bighorn, stellte er sich der US-Armee erneut als Kundschafter für einen Rachefeldzug gegen die Indianer zur Verfügung. Im Gefecht am Warbonnet Creek tötete er den Unterhäuptling Yellow Hand (eigentlich Yellow Hair) und skalpierte ihn mit dem Ausruf: ?Der erste Skalp für Custer!? Yellow Hand blieb neben seinem Pferd das einzige Opfer des Gefechts, welches von den Zeitungen im Osten als große Schlacht aufgebauscht wurde. Grabill, 1891) Ned Buntline, ein US-amerikanischer Journalist aus New York, begann nach einer Begegnung mit Cody, Theaterstücke, Berichte und Groschenhefte über ?Buffalo Bill? zu veröffentlichen, die kommerziell sehr erfolgreich wurden. Etliche Episoden wurden damals erheblich übertrieben und waren wesentlich an der Bildung der noch heute gültigen Klischees über den Wilden Westen beteiligt.[1] Cody, der sich 1872 bereits Künstlergruppen angeschlossen hatte und in den Stücken von Ned Buntline aufgetreten war, erkannte seine wirtschaftliche Chance, trennte sich von Buntline und gründete 1883 seine eigene Buffalo Bill?s Wild West Show, die ganz dem unrealistischen Stil der Veröffentlichungen von Ned Buntline und anderen entsprach (vgl. auch Völkerschau). Die Show stellte ein riesiges Aufgebot an Menschen und Tieren dar und es gelang ihm, berühmte indianische Häuptlinge wie Sitting Bull als Mitwirkende zu engagieren. Cody exportierte seine Show auch nach Europa. Die Buffalo Bill?s Wild West Show wurde erstmals am 19. April 1890 in München aufgeführt. In München wurde Buffalo Bill scherzhaft ?Ochsen-Willi? genannt. Cody gastierte mit seiner Truppe vom 19. April bis zum 5. Mai 1890 auf der Theresienwiese. Dafür wurde ein etwa 6.000 Zuschauer fassendes Zelt aufgebaut. Die stets ausverkauften, dreistündigen Nachmittagsvorstellungen wurden noch von Menschen verfolgt, die sich auf umliegende Hausdächer stellten. Prinz Ludwig, der spätere König Ludwig III. von Bayern, und sein Hofstaat zählten zu den Ehrengästen. Die einheimische Presse schrieb amüsiert: ?Abgesehen von kleinen Intermezzi, als da sind Pferderennen zwischen Cowboys, Mexikanern und Indianern, zwischen amerikanischen Hinterwäldler-Damen, zwischen sattellosen Indianerknaben usw., haben wir drei Hauptstücke: die brillanten Leistungen der Schützen, das unübertreffliche Reiten in jeglicher Gestalt der Cowboys und Vaqueros und drittens die interessanten Kämpfe mit den Indianern, die natürlich gegenüber dem Civilisationsmittel der Flinte stets den Kürzeren ziehen.?[6] Vom 16. bis 21. Juli 1890 campierte Cody in Braunschweig auf dem Leonhardplatz. Der Tross bestand aus 30 Eisenbahnwaggons ?mit Hunderten von Indianern, Cowboys, Pferden, Büffeln ??.[7] Die Chronisten meldeten damals im Braunschweiger Stadtanzeiger Zuschauerrekorde: 13.634 Zuschauer am 16. Cody / Buffalo Bill". - The famed cowboy and showman, announced as "Büffel Willy" on the Austrian and Bavarian legs of his tour, performed "Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show" in Vienna twice, in 1890 and again in May and June of 1906. For the latter show, a three-week affair involving a cast of 800 performers and 500 horses, an amphitheatre arena with a capacity for 12,000 viewers was built near the Rotunde dome in the Prater. "Twenty days of the show drew an audience of more than 200,000 spectators - an enormous success" (cf. Wiener Zeitung, 30 March 2016).

In 1909 Cody merged with a former rival, Gordon William Lillie ("Pawnee Bill", 1860-1942), to create "Buffalo Bill's Wild West and Pawnee Bill's Great Far East". The combined production, sometimes called the "Two Bills Show", featured traditional frontier acts with more exotic attractions like elephants, camels, and belly dancers. Mounting debt and a series of poor investments eventually forced Buffalo Bill to declare bankruptcy and shut down the show in 1915. - On colour-illustrated headed stationery of "Buffalo Bill's Wild West combined with Pawnee Bill's Great Far East", including Cody's and Lillie's portraits in profile.
