In den Warenkorb8vo,pp. x, [ii], 362, [4]; title page browned at edges; bound in recent half calf and marbled boards, spine gilt, green morocco label. First edition: the author's principal collection of verse. Edward Cobden (1683-1764) was a fashionable high church London clergyman, one of the King's Chaplains in Ordinary. He was a friend and schoolmate of the neo-Latin poet Edward Holdsworth, whose Muscipula was in its day regarded as a masterpiece of classical wit; included here is Cobden's translation, 'The Mouse-Trap', which he had written in 1718. There are also a number of Hertfordshire poems, and one addressed to Pope on his translation of Homer. The assessment of this volume in the original DNB is amusingly dismissive: 'In this work he eulogizes Stephen Duck's poetic fame, glorifies somebody's squirrel and a lady's canary, and laments over a dead cow'. A more recent evaluation in the Oxford DNB does not comment on the quality of Cobden's verse. Foxon p. 129.…

In den Warenkorb4to, pp. xii, 175, 170-386, 389-455, [1] blank; [ii], iv, [3]-361, [1] blank, [6] table; complete despite the pagination; some light dampstains in the outer margins, else a very good solid copy in contemporary calf, worn but neatly rebacked, spine lettered in gilt. First edition of this collection of prose and verse by Edward Cobden (1683-1764), long-lived Church of England cleric, archdeacon of London and finally president of Sion College. Cobden was known as a poet from his schooldays at Winchester and in later years his lack of success at court (where he preached several times, but often controversially) must have meant that he took more comfort from his poetry than his religious prose. The present collection includes previously unpublished sermons on the Beatitudes, and is dedicated to his parishioners in Acton and in central London; a printed note on the title page verso indicates that fifty copies of this substantial work were to be sold to benefit 'a particular charity'. The Bowyer Ledgers show that only 250 copies were printed in all. The book was presumably printed for Cobden's own distribution. The poetical section of the work, over 360 pages, is largely a reprint of a commoner work, Cobden's Poems on Several Occasions (1748). That too was printed by Bowyer, in an edition of 1000 copies, and is hence somewhat commoner - but the present collection includes numerous poems which cannot have been in the earlier volume: a poem written on his resignation from court (p. 310-11), one to 'Miss C.M. at Losely' written in May 1749 (313-27), an epitaph on Anne Key (347-8), who died in December 1755, and a curiously credulous poem on the Elizabeth Canning affair: 'An Ode on E.C. alias Clarissa exemplified' (327-9) which could not have been written before 1753, and in which he draws the obvious parallel between the supposedly abducted Canning and the fictional Clarissa Harlowe, Richardson's creation of 1747-8. This is a substantial collection, of which ESTC records nine copies in the UK, but only five elsewhere Harvard, Princeton, Rice, Minnesota and Illinois.…
