Trade catalogue from this noted American boiler and greenhouse manufacturer and builder of major public conservatories in the U.S. The company began in 1849 when Frederick Lord, a carpenter, started building wood and glass green…houses for his neighbors in Buffalo, NY. This catalogue has much information on selecting the right boiler for a greenhouse, welded steel boilers with specifications, Burnham cast iron boilers with ratings and data, square sectional master boilers, Yello-Jack cast iron boilers, insulation and more. There are photographs of the boilers and their parts. A good, bright copy which has a crease running down the middle. There is a paper clip mark at the top of the front cover which affects the first few pages else the text is very good and clean. Scarce.

In den Warenkorb12mo bifolium: 4 pp. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper. Begins: 'I am sorry to say that I have to place our affairs in your hands such as I never did before and I hope never to have to do again.' As the recipient may know, 'a vessel was built for me last year by the Messrs Hall in Aberdeen and was built under the insp…ection of Lloyds surveyor according to a certain specification & contract.' Selkirk 'had so much confidence in the character of the Messrs Hall' that he thought himself 'quite safe with the supervision of the Lloyds surveyor but finding the vessel leaky I had her inspected by the Dockyard people at Malta and they discovered on removing certain planks that the construction of the vessel was essentially defective and not according to the specification & contract'. Selkirk alleges that he has been 'abominably defrauded & sent to sea in a vessel postively unsafe' as a result of 'gross carelessness or [.] collusion between Messrs Hall & the surveyor'. He spent £300 on repairs in Malta, but he cannot keep the vessel '[i]n any shape' and feels that 'Messrs. Hall ought to take her off my hands & give me back my money with such reasonable deduction as might be considered fair for the deterioration by wear & tear for a year - I being allowed also for the Malta dockyard bill as a set off against that'. He does not know how the case stands in 'strict law', but 'considering the awful exposure that an action for fraud would bring about' feels that the shipwrights 'would be anxious to compound at any rate'. Asks the recipient to try and 'privately find out in what mind they are about', and communicate the information to Eden Colville, Fenchurch Buildings, London. 'If they defy us and are in the mind to defend the action we will have to consider how to proceed.' Hall & Co were active between 1790 and 1957. According to one authority 'Alexander Hall died in 1849 leaving his two sons, James and William, to run the business. The brothers were responsible for many famous clippers.'.

In den Warenkorb2pp., 4to. Bifolium. Addressed on reverse of second leaf 'To | John Hankey Esqr'. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. An unusually forthright document in the staid world of Georgian banking, the letter begins: 'Sir | We have received the favor of your Letter dated yesterday with much surprize, not only as it informs us of… a praemium being offer'd with an acceptance of your house, but also as it seems to intimate that it has been done with our concurrence - we can assure you, Sir, that your Letter is the only information we have had upon this subject - the bill, it is true, is in our hands, and we have Lord St John's directions to deliver it to a person who is to pay a Sum of money into his account but we are perfectly ignorant from what that money is to arise'. Further instructions from Lord St John are required, 'before the person calls for the bill'. From the Hankey & Co. banking archive.

In den WarenkorbGlasgow: Printed by John Graham and Co., 1827. A Compilation of Scottish Justiciary Records with Manuscript Annotations by Lord Alloway Cathcart, David, Lord Alloway [1763-1829]. List of Cases for Trial at the Glasgow Spring Circuit, May, 1827. Right Honourable Lord Gillies and Lord Alloway. A. Wood, Esq. Advocate Depute [Drop-H…ead Title]. [Glasgow]: Printed by John Graham and Co., [1827]. [788] pp. Quarto (10" x 8-1/4"; 25.4 x 21 cm). Contemporary three-quarter morocco over marbled boards, gilt-stamped label reading "The Right Hon. Lord Alloway" to front board, blind decoration, gilt-edged raised bands and title to spine. Light rubbing to boards, a few small scuffs, nicks and scratches, moderate rubbing to extremities, corners bumped. Light toning to interior, occasional light foxing, two slight horizontal fold lines to many leaves, a few folded corners, light soiling in a few places, crack to text block before final leaf. A handsome volume. $1,500. * Compiled over the course of the term, this volume is comprised of a list of 77 cases on the docket for the Glasgow Circuit Court of Justiciary in May 1827 followed by records for 72 of those cases. The records, typically 5-8 pp. in length, consist of a short summary of the indictment along with a list of witnesses and jury members, if applicable. Each record is individually paginated and docketed in print on the verso of the final leaf, suggesting that they were issued individually as the term progressed. The list of cases and many of the records are annotated by Lord Alloway, a Scottish lord of session appointed to the Justiciary Court in 1826. The charges range in severity from murder to petty theft. Almost certainly rebound by Alloway for his future reference, this handsome volume is a fascinating glimpse of the work of a nineteenth-century court in Scotland from a judge's perspective. Compilation volumes like these were created for the personal use of judges and advocates and are quite scarce. OCLC locates 6 copies of compilations from the Glasgow Justiciary Court, 5 at the University of Glasgow and 1 at Harvard, none of which match ours. Glasgow: Printed by John Graham and Co., 1827 (illustrator).
