He acknowledges Wilson's 'kind letter regarding Dalglish', who 'suffered a good deal during the latter weeks of his life, but I am glad to say that even then he still retained that brightness of disposition of which you speak'. Dalglish will be 'greatly missed by many book buyers in the West of Scotland and we, personally, will find his place very hard to fill.' Wylie is 'taking a liberty' in sending Wilson's letter to Dalglish's widow: 'I am sure she will be glad to know that her husband left such a pleasant mark on the younger of his contemporaries'. He ends in the hope that 'time continues to deal kindly' with Wilson. Brown's collection of shells is now held by the Kelvingrove Museum in Glasgow. 4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. The text of the letter is on the verso of the last leaf and recto of the first, with the central two pages each carrying a neat list, in double column, the first of 'Bivalves' and the second of 'Univalves'. Pinned at the head of the first page of the letter is an advertisement cut from a newspaper, reading: 'A DANISH COLLECTOR OF SHELLS | wishes to exchange Fine Specimens of Land and Freshwater Shells from Denmark, with Specimens from England and other places. Refer to DR. O. A. L. MORCH, Zoological Museum, Copenhagen.' Brown expresses his willingness to 'exchange specimens', explaining: 'The locality in which I chiefly reside is not very favourable for Collecting Land & freshwater mollusca but I spend a few days yearly in dredging and collecting on our Western Coasts and I append (overleaf) a rough note of the Larger Species which I can supply from my cabinet at all times - this list could, I think, in the course of the coming Summer be nearly doubled chiefly by the addition of the smaller species such as Eulina Skenea, Montacuta, Odostomia, Utriculus, etca.' He offers to send 'a parcel such as indicated by this list'. At the foot of the second page of the letter is a third list, this one of 'some of the water species obtainable in this neighbourhood which I usually can supply'.…

An accompanying typed note identifies the postal features as follows: 'Postage: - 3d. pre-paid. Colonial outward Ship Letter rate. | 8d. to collect. Private Ship Letter rate. | Handstruck Marks: - PAID SHIP LETTER SYDNEY AP+21 1847 in red. (SL 3, var. 1 - early use.) | NN 29AU29 1847 in red. | GLASGOW AU31 1847 11 AM in black.' The text begins: ' dealy if ever anything at all can be realized over & above the charges of store rent &c incurred upon the shipment. The Cavendish from what we have seen of it is in tolerably fair condition but this description of Tobacco is as yet in very limited request here, & at present the low prices at which the best samples of Negrohead are to be had merely shuts out the other kind from sale altogether. We must only hold it on for yet a little while, as ridding ourselves of it now could not be effected at any better rate than from 3d to 3 1/2 pr lb -'. The concluding paragraph refers to 'the arrival of the "Alexander" from London' with '30 Tierces Negrohead', the specifications of 'Mr. Somervail', 'the present prostrate state of the market'. The directors were all convicted of fraud-related offenses and given sentences of eight to eighteen months. The two second editions, both published in 1879, have identical editorial content. The other issue does not have advertisements; its pagination is 272 pp. (The Edinburgh Publishing Company also published another illustrated report of this trial by Charles Tennant Couper.) Edward Hailstone [1818-1890], a Yorkshire solicitor, was a notable book collector. His vast collection included a large collection of manuscripts and books related to Yorkshire. He donated his Yorkshire collection to the dean's library, York Minster in his will. The rest of his collection was sold in two multi-day sales by Sotheby's. Contemporary three-quarter morocco over marbled boards, featuring a small green binder's ticket on the front pastedown reading: "John Carss of Glasgow Bookbinders." Front board features a custom gilt-stamped morocco label reading: "The Right Hon. Lord Alloway." Spine with blind decoration, gilt fillets surrounding raised bands, and gilt title "Glasgow Spring Circuit 1827." Light rubbing to boards with minor scuffs, nicks, and scratches; moderate rubbing to extremities and bumped corners. Structurally sound. A definitive, signed example of the work of Glasgow's premier binder of the era, custom-bound for the judge's personal reference library. Interior shows light toning and occasional moderate foxing. Two slight horizontal fold lines are present on most leaves (indicative of original delivery style before binding), along with a few folded corners and minor local soiling. A single internal crack to the text block before the final leaf, though the binding remains firm. A handsome, well-preserved volume. $1,500. A unique, comprehensively annotated association copy documenting the inner workings of nineteenth-century Scottish criminal justice. Compiled directly over the course of the session, this volume begins with the printed master list of 77 cases on the docket for the Glasgow Circuit Court of Justiciary in May 1827. It is followed by the individual printed records for 72 of those cases (typically 5-8 pages each), providing a summary of the indictment alongside full lists of witnesses and jury pools. The fact that these documents were printed individually and docketed on the verso reveals a sophisticated system of rapid legal printing designed to serve as functional bench briefs before oral arguments took place. 2 large format photographs, in substantial original dark wood frames, each 720 x 615 mm within mount, signed in ink on the second photograph lower right "McLure MacDonald & Co. Glasgow". c.  A fine pair of yacht portraits, unusual for their size. The first photograph, of Kaiser Wilhelm's Meteor II (evidenced by the Prussian Eagle burgee) has remains of titling on the mount at foot, which refers to the Queens Cup, 1896, at the Royal Northern Yacht Club on the Clyde: the second portrait is as yet unidentified. Britannia was beaten by Meteor II in this, Meteor's first season, but she normally flew a burgee incorporating the Prince of Wales' feathers. The unidentified photograph has some early damage from the original mounting - the lines of staining across the image. Meteor II is in better order, with a little bubbling from its early mounting on board.…
