All edges gilt. Marbled pastedowns. Early, unique photographic record of a journey along the Nile taken in 1864, prepared by the English barrister Henry Gaskell Close (1836-1913). A rare survival, this album brings together Close's own photographs of Egypt with his autograph commentary and presentation letter of 1908, forming one coherent work of travel. Among the most compelling images appear views of Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan, a shot of the Bab-el-Kebir cataracts, and historical landmarks including the Great Pyramid and the Sphinx next to temples, hieroglyphs and artwork at Philae, Abydus, Dendera, Karnak, Medinet Habu, the Ramesseum, Edfu, Esné, and Kom Ombo. Each photograph is faced by a detailed caption in Close's own hand, largely derived from John Gardner Wilkinson's classic works of Egyptology. - Affixed to the front pastedown is a signed autograph letter dated 8 May 1908, in which Close presents the album to a friend identified as "Baker", remarking: "As you have just seen the Nile up to date, it occurred to me that a collection of photographs I took in 1864 might be acceptable to you. These photographs are consequently 44 years old. It will give me much pleasure if you will accept this copy of my early work in photography". - Henry Gaskell Close was born in Naples on 2 July 1836, the son of Sir James Close and Henrietta Hannah Gaskell, and died 29 January 1913. He was a barrister of the Middle Temple and the father of the travel writer Henrietta "Etta" Close (1871-1945). Save for this album, very little evidence survives of Close's activity as photographer, making it the principal record of his Egyptian journey and an exceptional example of 19th century travel culture. - Binding slightly rubbed and chafed. Some spotting, slight fading to a small number of photographs, some wear to final leaf; a few small marginal tears and 3 repaired tears not affecting photographs. Parnell had died around ten weeks before, on 6 October 1891. See Harrison's entry in the Oxford DNB: 'After the party broke in two in December 1890, Harrison campaigned with his chief in Ireland, constituting himself a bodyguard and aide-de-camp. After Parnell's death in October 1891 Harrison, young though he was, hastened to Br…ighton to put his services at the disposal of Parnell's widow. It was then that he heard from her a very different account of the circumstances surrounding her divorce from that given in court. This indicated that O'Shea's evidence had been completely untrustworthy, that he had apparently connived for a long period at Parnell's relations with his wife, from whom he himself had virtually separated, and that his motives had been a mixture of political ambition and financial greed. Harrison felt unable to publish this story until those most likely to be affected were dead.' The present item is from a collection of Irish nationalist autographs assembled by Miss Burgess of Norwich. 1p, 12mo. On first leaf of a bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded once for postage. Reads: 'Dear Madam, / Mrs. Parnell requests me to thank you for your kind letter of the 5th. inst. & to say that she will be glad to give you the autograph if you will forward your book to her for the purpose / I am / Yours faithfully / Henry Harrison'.

All three letters good, on lightly aged paper. Close's first letter (12mo, 2 pp): He is pleased to hear 'that Professor O. T. Jones is convalescent and back at work'. Close will write to him to ask if he will take part in the 'Commission' on the 'Terrasses littorales'. Having none 'handy', he is writing to the Admiralty Hydrogra…pher for a 'list of Admiralty Charts'. The Closes have 'settled to take a house in Jersey for the children's holidays', so there is 'little chance of our being at Oxford for the British Association meeting'. 'It is very hard to find a small house in this neighbourhood.' Close's second letter (12mo, 1 p, in stamped, addressed, postmarked envelope): He is sending on the Admiralty charts from 'Captain Douglas, the Hydrographer'. 'You will see from the enclosed that you can keep the Catalogue. I hope that you will find in it what you want.' Douglas's letter (4to, 1 p): 'In this Catalogue [not present] will be found an Alphabetical list as well as a Geographical list of Charts, and in the end of the Cantalogue Index maps showing, amongst others, Charts of the Mediterranean: there will also be found an Index map of the Sailing Directions. I do not think I can do better than let him have this Catalogue, which he is quite at liberty to retain for future reference.'.
