Lacking front and rear endpages but with text complete; first page of the book is the title-page. [4], 434, 545-939, [17]pp. Page numbers 435-544 omitted but text continuous. Tabula/Index of [17] pp at rear. Expected toning and spotting to pages. Library cloth is slightly irregular and bubbled lower inch or two from a damp episode, also visible as a tide line and ripple to the newer endsheets. Damp line to the lower corner of the first 50 or so leaves and the buk of the final; 30 or so leaves likely the result of much earlier damp incident. Institution has reinforced the edges of the final two leaves with thins strips of archival tape. Prior ownership in manuscript top edge of title page - "Jos. Thmas ." [? ] and W H Tod [? ] . Considered by many to be the swan song of silent film star Talmadge, whose career would flag at the turn of the decade, with the arrival of sound pictures. Set in Austria. 8 x 10 inches. Later three-quarter calf over marbled boards, raised bands, lettering piece, black-stamped publication date and black-stamped library initials (?) to spine, endpapers renewed. Light rubbing to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, some chipping to head of spine, corners bumped and somewhat worn, front hinge starting, crack in text block near rear hinge. Moderate toning, faint dampspotting in a few places, faint dampstaining to fore-edges of a few leaves, light soiling to preliminaries, a few brief early annotations and a struck-through signature to title page. $250. * Second and final edition, a reissue of the first edition with a new title page. The first edition was published in 1703. Ingleby produced this book from manuscripts acquired after Clift's death. The forms are arranged alphabetically by topic with an appendix of miscellaneous precedents.
