Se non fosse passato per la tragedia ungherese e per la morte, il caso Antonio Pallavicini - alias Antál Pálinkás - potrebbe essere venuto dall'umorismo di Gogol': il destino sarcastico di un uomo che decise di cambiare nome perché il suo, così aristocratico, gli sembrava ormai estraneo alla sua identità, e finì schiacciato da quel nome abiurato. La vicissitudine, maturata nel contesto della rivoluzione del 1956, vale come un simbolo dell'attitudine tirannica a fare della carta d'identità non scelta - quando si è nati e dove, da che famiglia, di che sesso e religione - una colpa, e dell'identità scelta una trama sospetta, da castigare. Antonio Pallavicini (1922-1957), figlio di un marchese ungherese di antiche origini italiane, aveva rinnegato il proprio nome e i propri avi con tutte le forze, per una regolare carriera di ufficiale dell'esercito. La sorte lo designò a eseguire l'ordine di scarcerazione del cardinale primate d'Ungheria Mindszenty. Ciò bastò a travolgere il leale Pálinkás-Pallavicini nella sceneggiatura della vendetta comunista, nella parte del traditore smascherato. In questa minuziosa ricostruzione di un avvenimento capricciosamente lugubre e poco noto, l'illusione quasi pirandelliana dell'alias Pálinkás offre una lente limpida per rivedere la ribellione di un popolo, che credette possibile la libertà e l'autogoverno.
