In den WarenkorbSee his entry in the Oxford DNB. 1p, 4to. On aged and worn paper; folded four times. Signed 'Clement Shorter'. The letter is headed with Sayers' Totnes address. He begins by explaining that the Sphere's 'Children's Supplement' has been abandoned due to 'the high cost of paper'. Turning to Sayers' other letter, he thanks him for offering to lend him a copy of Baring Gould's 'Strange Survivals', but that he will obtain his own copy. He ends by thanking him for 'the various information'. …
[William Latey, QC, jurist and journalist.] Autograph Letter Signed ('Wim Latey') to Clement King Shorter, regarding petitions for a civil list pension for his mother, the widow of editor John Latey.

In den Warenkorb4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. A long and detailed letter, beginning: 'The situation is not quite as we thought it. Yesterday I saw Mr. Higgs at Downing Street and he explained to me all the circumstances concerning the consideration of Mrs. Latey's petitions. | The suggestion emanating from him, with the Prime Minister's concurrence, is as follows.' The plan outlined, as Mrs Latey is not eligible for the pension, is for a fund to be established for her, to which 'the Prime Minister would add [.] a sum from Royal Bounty - the whole to be sunk in an annuity for her. | The idea of losing this chance of a subsidy from the State is not a pleasant one, but it would be very distasteful for me and my brothers to appeal to people upon whom we have no shadow of a claim, just because they have been friends or admirers of our Father.' A capital sum of around £300 would only give an annuity of £20 or £30 a year, and he would decline to proceed if this were the case, suggesting that the capital be paid to his mother in installments until he and his brothers are 'able to make her comfortable'., adding: 'I have no doubt the Institute of Journalists and theh Newspaper Press Fund would co-operate, and doubtless the I.L.N. would contribute.' The letter continues for another three paragraphs. William Latey's distinguished career, beginning in journalism and ending at the bar, is outlined in his entry in Who Was Who. For more on John Latey, a leading figure in the world of Victorian journalism and founder of the London Press Club, see his entry in the Oxford DNB. Shorter had succeeded John Lash Latey as editor of the Illustrated London News, and had on occasion worked with his son.…

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. A nice-looking lot of eight different editions of the Sufi poet's best-loved, classic epic poem. The individual volumes are illustrated beautifully by a range of different artists and in multiple formats, but each is in hardcover format. The poet, Omar Khayyam (or Khayyami) was born, likely at Nishapur, in the Persian northeast, somewhere between about 1025 and 1050 A.D. His surname "Khayyam" means "tent-maker" in Persian, which might, like St. Paul/Saul, have denoted his father's vocation and major income-source. The lot is comprised of the following: 1) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, translated and edited by Edward FitzGerald, New York: E.P. Dutton, 1922, illustrated by Fish (the British artist Ann Harriet Fish). Preface to the First Edition included here. Possibly a variant binding but of a quite scarce and valuable edition. Sturdy, though rear joint cloth cracked, bound as a big, tall, quarto hardcover format, decorated orange, black and vanilla paper over boards, abraded and rubbed, black cloth-backed, bumping to and scuffing of spine head and foot. Decorated duotone endpapers front and rear. Fine frontis illustration, tissue protected. List of illustrations show a half-title design, then illustrations to 18 quatrains, each being tissue-guarded, and quite fine. Evocative historiated initials. 108 pp.; 2) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, with an Introduction by T. Cuyler Young, and illustrated by Eugene Karlin, 1964, a fourth printing of this edition. Near Fine condition brick-red cloth over boards, gilt illustration to front cover, lettering to spine. Bright and shiny dust jacket, illustrated, price-clipped and machine-clipped, chipping to and closed tear of top edge. Evocative black-and-white illustrations throughout. 80 [2] pp. plus a note about the illustrator and the edition; 3) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, edited and with an Introduction by Louis Untermeyer, New York: Random House, 1947. Very Good condition decorated red and black cloth over boards, gilt lettering to spine. Light scuffing to spine foot, else quite sturdy of binding and attractive of interior. Illustrated duotone endpapers front and rear, fine full-color illustration at frontis, based on a translation of the First Edition and combinations of the third, fourth, and fifth editions. 147 [4] pp.; 4) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, London: Macmillan & Co., 1895, a Very Good condition exemplar in hardcover format, vanilla cloth over boards, short octavo in format, gilt-ruled front and rear, gilt lettering to spine. Heavily toned endpapers, dissipating quickly. Loose bookplate of Holbrook Jackson laid in at front. Rough-cut fore-edges. 112 pp.; 5) Omar Khayyam's Quatrains, English-Persian, compiled by A. Mirbagheri, published in Tehran, Iran, by Ketabsaraye. Nearly brand-new in appearance, bound in brick-red cloth over boards, sharp and distinct gilt lettering to spine, with Persian Introduction by Moini Kermanshabi, with calligraphy by Mohammad Tagi Safania (bilingual in English and Persian) and illustrations by Reza Badrolsama throughout, many score of them. Bright and shiny dust jacket, illustrated, little worn, protected by a plastic coat. Gilt edges all around. Unpaginated, but roughly 60 pp. Gift-quality condition. 6) Fine condition exemplar of Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, published in London by Collins, n.d., but roughly 1950s, red leatherette over boards, gilt-stamped lettering to front cover, housed in a Very Good condition cardboard slipcase, blue and gold, and illustrated beautifully by evocative black-and-white engravings by Marjorie Anderson. 126 [1] pp. 7) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, Introduction by Clement K. Shorter, published in 1907 by William Heinemann of London, England. Pocketbook-sized gray cloth over boards, blind-stamped design and ruling to front cover, gilt lettering to spine. Black-and-white portrait of Edward FitzGerald at frontis, tissue-protected. 68 pp.; 8) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, Preface by Nathan Haskell Dole, published in 1900 by Thomas Mosher of N. …
