Dance playdoyer pro-domo, Bertrand Clauzel (1772-1846), maréchal de France, justifie les causes de l'échec de Constantine (1836), par faute de renforts et de ressources adéquates, et réfute toutes les accusations, improbité, spoliations, inhumanité, etc., portées contre lui.

The petition is headed 'A Monsieur le Baron de Schonen | liquidateur de l'ancienne liste civile', with 'Sallemant' (the name of the petitioner) beneath it in another hand. Clausel's note, of eleven lines of a few words each, is in the left-hand margin, and recommends to 'la bienveillance de Mr. de Schonen' the petition of a woman who describes herself as 'une malheureuse veuve'. Laid down on the reverse is a piece of card, carrying a biographical note in English in an nineteenth-century hand.

"Erste deutsche Ausgabe. ? Nach der Julirevolution 1830 bekam Bertrand Clausel (beide Schreibweisen; 1772-1842) das Kommando über die französischen Truppen in Afrika. Für seinen siegreichen Feldzug in Algerien erhielt er die Marschallswürde. Als er aber Constantine und Oran an tunesische Prinzen verlor, wurde er 1831 abberufen. 1835 ernannte man ihn erneut zum Generalgouverneur von Algerien. Nach der unglücklichen Expedition gegen Constantine wurde er im Februar 1837 seines Postens enthoben und kehrte endgültig nach Frankreich zurück. Dort sah er sich heftigen Angriffen ausgesetzt und zu einem "Verteidigungsfeldzug" in eigener Sache genötigt. Die Pläne zeigen die Routen von Bona nach Constantine und Stora sowie einen Grundriss der Stadt Constantine von 1836. ?Unbeschnitten, stockfleckig, sonst gut erhalten. ? Vgl. Gay 586; B. F.
