Reliure en plein veau glacé vert, plats estampés à froid et ornés d'encadrements dorés, dos à quatre nerfs ornés de bandeaux dorés, motifs estampés à froid entre les nerfs, bandeaux dorés sur les coiffes, titre et ex-dono estampé à l'or ("offert à Madame Ramaeckers") au dos, coupes ornées, encadrement estampé à froid sur les contreplats, papier rose sur les contreplats, tranches dorées, une belle reliure romantique attribuable à Thouvenin jeune. Reliure insolée et légèrement frottée avec des épidermures, une petite zone frottée sur le premier plat près du médaillon central, filets d'encadrement estompés par endroits, quelques rousseurs aux feuillets. * Un bel album de vues de l'Inde, de Canton et des bords de la mer Rouge, esquissées par le commodore Robert Elliott (1790-1849), officier de la Royal Navy, à l'occasion d'une mission de commandement qu'il effectua entre 1822 et 1824. Ces esquisses, prises sur le vif, furent retravaillées par plusieurs dessinateurs anglais, gravées sur acier et publiées en 1835 par la maison Fisher & Co. sous le titre Views in India, China, and on the Shores of the Red Sea. Les images furent accompagnées d'un texte historique et descriptif rédigé par l'une des rares femmes-écrivains voyageuses, Emma Roberts ; le présent ouvrage en constitue la traduction française. Emma Roberts avait vécu en Inde, où elle avait accompagné sa sur, mariée à un militaire déployé dans le Bengale ; les descriptions du pays qu'elle donne dans cet ouvrage procèdent ainsi de sa propre expérience. Après le décès de sa sur en 1831, Roberts s'installa à Calcutta, où elle rédigea poèmes, essais et nouvelles, appréciés pour leur style descriptif et direct. Obligée de rentrer en Angleterre pour des raisons de santé, elle se consacra un temps à des travaux d'édition, avant de ne pouvoir se résoudre à retourner en Inde - un voyage qui devait être le dernier, car l'année suivante elle succomba à une maladie. Accompagnée d'une amie, elle traversa la France, puis l'Égypte, avant de rejoindre Bombay par mer : un périple de deux mois qu'elle relata dans un ouvrage publié après sa mort. L'exemple d'Emma Roberts illustre l'inclusion progressive des femmes dans le monde de l'édition, ainsi que leur participation croissante à l'exploration du monde au XIXe siècle. This overview of their first exhibition includes photographs by leading figures including Alfred Stieglitz, James Craig Annan and Rudolf Eickemeyer Jr, and numerous others. Printers incluce L'Imprimerie Chaix, Georges Petit Gallery (supplied, of Paris), T. Fillon/LeMercier & Cie (Paris), Richard Paulussen (Vienna), James Craig Annan (Glasgow), Paul Dujardin (Paris), J. Blechinger (Austria).t69 of the photographers accepted for this first exposition were from France but the material included was highly international. There were 30 photographers from Great Britain including Scotland and the Isle of Wight; Austria had 17 followed by Belgium and Holland with ten.
