[a good sound clean book, with light wear to the extremities; the jacket is edgeworn, particularly along the bottom edge, where there various small nicks and tears with associated creasing, and a little paper loss at the base of the spine]. Very scarce novel about a young widow (age 36) who holds an obsessive and neurotic love for her adolescent son, to the extent that she refuses to remarry (despite having three quite serious suitors) because she feels it would be a "betrayal" of the boy. The author (1894-1971) made something of a splash with his first novel, "The Western Shore" in 1925 -- still considered something of a classic of California fiction (and particularly of LGBTQ lit, cited in Young (842) and with an entry in Slide's "Lost Gay Novels") -- but then went novelistically dark for the next 20+ years before publishing back-to-back novels in 1946 and 1947 (the latter was "Naomi Martin"). Given the title and theme, one might expect this novel to be an exploration of an over-possessive mother's incestuous longing for her gay son, with the focus on how it warps the boy's growth to maturity -- but in fact this tale is practically all about the mom (there's a reason she's given top billing in the title) and how she negotiates and navigates her affairs with her various gentleman friends, all the while trying to reconcile her attraction to them with her strong feelings for her son. From a narrative perspective, the son is conveniently off at boarding school (in Ojai) for most of the book, which is set in and around San Francisco, and even when he's present in the story there's no indication that he's gay. (Mostly he seems to find his mother somewhat annoying.) Crane himself was known to be gay, and had a 47-year relationship with his partner, Clyde Evans; he also published a number of short stories, but primarily made his living as a lecturer in English Literature at the University of California Extension School. His papers (two small collections) are held by UC-Berkeley's Bancroft Library and the Library of Congress. (I think it's also worthy of note that the book's dedication is to historian and critic Van Wyck Brooks, described by Slide as Crane's "best friend," a relationship further evidenced by the presence of 28 letters from Crane in Brooks's papers at the University of Pennsylvania.). …

A "college novel" with a difference, at least in its day: although the genre itself was already well-established by the mid-1920s, a preponderance of such books were set against the backdrop of Ivy League or other East Coast schools. This one, by contrast, took place where its title indicates -- specifically, at the University of California in Berkeley. Its publishers proclaimed it to be "the first grown-up treatment in fiction of undergraduate life in an American university" (a contention with which readers of F. Scott Fitgerald's "This Side of Paradise," published five years earlier, might have taken issue). Take that for whatever it's worth, but the book is perhaps more notable as a kind of landmark in gay fiction -- or it would be a landmark, if more attention had been given to this aspect of it. For a long time, if it was discussed at all, it was as a college novel, as by John O. Lyons in "The College Novel in America," who called it "an excellently written work, [although] in a sense it does not pretend to be a novel.rather a series of character sketches". Although cited in Young (842), the book was virtually ignored in histories of gay literature (Roger Austen in "Playing the Game" brushed it off with just a passing mention for its "veiled homosexuality," a pretty clear indication that he hadn't actually bothered to read it) until its inclusion in Anthony Slide's 2003 study "Lost Gay Novels." Slide notes that when the book was reprinted in 1985, a new introductory essay made no reference whatsoever to its gay content -- not altogether surprising, I would say, from a Utah-based publisher (Peregrine Smith Books) in the mid-1980s. This scholarly neglect is a little hard to fathom when one reads the assessment from Dr. Bill Lipsky (quoted from the online San Francisco Bay Times) of the novel as "the first book from a mainstream American press whose characters openly speculated about each other's' sexualitytheir 'tendencies in love' and wondered whether or not they were 'queer.' It presented its gay characters, not as stereotypes, but as individuals who came from different backgrounds, 'a gallery of credible human beings.' None was a villain, corrupting the innocent around him. Nobody met a tragic ending." In terms of geographic specificity, this book has it in spades: name-checked on the first page alone are Marin County and Alcatraz (which, we might note, in 1925 was still a military prison, not yet the fearsome federal penitentiary it would become nine years hence). The opening chapter depicts the protagonist having a little pre-semester gadabout in San Francisco, with numerous streets and locations referenced (including the Holmes Book Store!), and when he gets across the Bay and prepares to take up his studies, the UC campus and the surrounding area are similarly un-fictionalized: Euclid Street, College Avenue, Durant Avenue are all mentioned early on.…

Scarce thus. The author's debut novel. Clarkson (1894-1971) was a Berkeley alumnus slumming it on the Left Bank when he wrote it. As the Berkeley college history site Gay Bears relates, "took the cliché-ridden genre of the 'college story' - with its pennants and hip flasks and coonskin coats - and gave it a new and unexpected twist: one of the main characters is a homosexual professor of English teaching at Berkeley in the year 1919." While savaged by critics and a poor seller, it was way ahead of its time. It was the first book published by a mainstream press to have characters speculating about each others' sexualities. Unusually for its time the gay characters weren't portrayed as stereotypes or villains, and none met a grisly end as punishment for their transgressions. Clarkson Crane (1894-1971) attended Berkeley, and this campus novel, set in 1919 and featuring a homosexual English professor, seems based on his time there (although the professor in question has never been identified). The Western Shore was poorly reviewed, and its gay content (which is considerable) was almost entirely ignored. Only the poet and playwright Stephen Vincent Benet made any reference to it : in his review for the New York Herald Tribune he warned that the novel contained passages that 'might well prove distasteful.' Crane, from a wealthy Chicago family, served in France in the U. S. Army Ambulance Corps during World War I. Unable to earn a living from his writing back in California he returned to France in 1923 and joined the expatriate community in Paris, writing this novel in a small Left Bank hotel. After its failure, Crane produced nothing for twenty years, and when his two novels of the 1940s also failed, he stopped writing altogether. A near fine copy of a very scarce title -- one of the first gay campus novels.…
