Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Published 1939/1940.This is a Very Good Set of 6 Divisions, originally published in 7 divisions this set lacks The Fifth Division.Uniform set in blue cloth with gilt titles to the upper covers with further gilt tooled Heraldic Vignettes to the front covers of all volumes.Original yellow endpapers.Volume one has b&w frontispiece of Sir Thomas-Masterman Hardy with engraved Title Page. This scarce work traces Nelson from his infancy to the rank of Commander and then on to his becoming a Rear-Admiral and finally from the hoisting of his flag to his glorious death. The work is published in three volumes and split into seven divisions. There are many wonderful engraved portraits of eminent figures such as rear Admiral Richard Kempenfelt and Frederick The Third,Lord Collingwood,Admiral Alan Gardner,Admiral Rodney Baron plus Battle Scene of Victory off Ushant.Division Six still has present a large folding map of Boulogne Harbour and it's fortifications. This is generally a very clean and tidy set with a little spotting present to the margins of the plates.text remians clean.Binding are firm with just a little weakness to Division Four towards centre section join.No previous inscriptions are present.Nelson went against the conventional tactics of the time by cutting through the enemy's lines. Nelson was noted for his ability to inspire and bring out the best in his men, to the point that it gained a name: "The Nelson Touch". His actions during these wars and his heroic image as a one-armed, one-eyed patriot, ensured that before and after his death he was revered. In 1798, even though he had been married since 1787, Nelson famously became embroiled in an affair with Emma, Lady Hamilton, the wife of William Hamilton, the British Ambassador to Naples which lasted until his death. Emma became Nelson's mistress, returning to the United Kingdom to live openly with him, and eventually they had a daughter, Horatia. It was the public knowledge of this affair that induced the Royal Navy to send Nelson back out to sea after he had been recalled.By the time of his death in 1805 Nelson had become a national hero, and he was given a State funeral. His memory lives on in numerous monuments, the most notable of which is London's Nelson's Column, which stands in the centre of Trafalgar Square.Scarce set Lacking Division Fine.Six Divisions Only 1839/1840.…

Letter: 6pp., 12mo, on bifolium and single leaf. An vivid and entertaining letter, shedding light on Victorian valuation and auctioneering practices. Barling wastes no time in passing on the bad news. 'I am very glad you have written to me about the B[awdeswe]ll. pictures & I can tell you [last world underlined] plainly what the 2 Christie's opinion was which I cd. not do to poor old C[larke]. S[toughto]n. The inspection in issue was a grievous disappointment. So far worse than I cd. have possibly believed, and then coming the question cd. two such Men as the Christies be wrong? for my part I think impossible [last word underlined twice] to have them looked over again by some other authority? - in as few words as I can put it I will give the Messrs. C opinion there being no difference between them. taking 4 or 5 pictures the so named Danae by Rubens, which they clearly set down as a vulgar daub, and the Minervas & if I recollect "choice of Paris" these I think old Clarke S considered the very valuable lot - I said to Christie "now will it answer to send these up to London? oh no said he - then I said what sum wd. they returrn after expenses 30£? he said they might return about 30 - however to cut the matter short - they said "there is not a picture in the house of any value and we knew it when we had been in it a very short time" this of course was as bad as bad cd. be'. Regarding 'the fowl pieces' - 'probably Spanish copies' - Barling exclaims: 'Surely they must (the family I mean) have been under an awful delusion! particularly as to price paid by the C o Cl: or he must have been an awful Noodle or the Christies (the first firm in the World in that line) know nothing of their business'. He feels that Beevor's 'good tact & judgment' will direct him 'for the best in the rather difficult affairs'. He now changes the subject, reporting 'a frightful murder in Shotesham tho: the woman yet breathed this mor[nin]g.', deploring the conduct of 'H P', and stating that he has received 'a very melancholy note from E R Br. yesterday in reference to himself - he says "that his strength has become "but labour & sorrow" and that "the conclusion cannot be far away". He concludes with other local news. Accompanying the letter is a list in another hand of six paintings (1p., 12mo, on worn paper), totalling £1200 in price. Above it Barling has written 'Catalogue of Pictures' and beneath it 'Clarke Stoughton Esqe.'. At the foot of the page Barling writes, in red ink, 'Deposited for Policy No 2199 | See Lr. 25th April 1868'. Included in the list are 'Danae in the Golden Shower - £200' and 'Diana bathing - £200'.…

First Edition. First Edition. Frontispiece and 3 other plates to volume I, 7 plates to volume II, 4 of them accompanied by plans, headpieces, vignettes and facsimiles to the text, double page pedigree to volume. 375; 511 pp. 2 vols. Imperial Quarto. "One of the main foundation stones of the Nelson legend" (Wilson, 'Nelson Apotheosised' in Cannadine (ed.), Admiral Lord Nelson), "the 'official' biography" (NMM). M'Arthur, a former naval purser, had served with Nelson in the Mediterranean and had already begun collecting material for a biography when he saw "an advertisement in the papers announcing that the Nelson family had selected a gentleman 'of high respectability and rank' to write the life, and asking all who had letters . in their possession not to make their material available to anyone else." McArthur came forward claiming, groundlessly, that Nelson himself had asked him to write his life, and that he had already incurred considerable expense in preparing the book, including the commissioning of a set of paintings to be engraved as illustrations. An unseemly squabble ensued, the outcome of which was fairly inevitable in that Earl Nelson was under pressure from the Prince Regent to commission his librarian and chaplain, James Stanier Clarke, to write the book. It was agreed that the authors would pool their efforts, but not before they had further fallen out over whose name should come first on the title page. That we do not refer to McArthur & Clarke is a lasting memorial to the usefulness of a powerful patron. The finished work is wonderfully illustrated with anecdotal head-pieces and plates by Westall and battle-scenes by Nicholas Pocock. The subscribers list is a remarkable directory of the great and the good of Regency Britain with an inevitable emphasis on naval notables. William Beckford took a copy on vellum - one of two "one of which was burnt" - Sir Home Popham and Admiral Keats proof copies, as also Admirals Cornwallis and Anson, Earl St. Vincent and Lady Hamilton. Thomas Masterman Hardy had an ordinary copy, as did the Sandwich Book Society and Leeds Circulating Library. Highly desirable thus. Cowie 137; NMM, II, 921 Contemporary full maroon straight-grained morocco, flat bands, title gilt direct to the spines, compartments with nested concentric gilt panels, centred on a rope-twist panel, with a ship under sail centre tool in the first, fifth and sixth compartments, wide arabesque rolled panels to the boards enclosing ruled and foliate panels in blind, dog-tooth edge-roll, all edges gilt, dog-tooth roll to turn-ins, dun endpapers Frontispiece and 3 other plates to volume I, 7 plates to volume II, 4 of them accompanied by plans, headpieces, vignettes and facsimiles to the text, double page pedigree to volume. 375; 511 pp. 2 vols.
