In den WarenkorbFull Calf. Zustand: Fine. First Edition. First Edition of this uncommon satirical depiction of various Regency-era character types and memes, in verse. Crown 8vo: viii,158,[2]pp, with eight delicately hand-colored aquatints, including the frontispiece. Complete with half-title and two pages of publisher's advertisements. (In eve…ry copy we've seen, plate no. 5, often described as bound out of sequence, is placed between plates nos. 7 and 8, and according to the text, that is where it belongs.) Later full tan calf, covers framed with French fillet and gilt sunburst ornament to corners, richly gilt spine in six compartments divided by raised bands, red morocco lettering piece gilt, gilt turn-ins, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. From the collection of bibliophile Brent Gration-Maxfield, with his characteristic manuscript ex-libris and tidy bibliographic notes ("collated perfect," "only blemish is a slight mark on the half title"). Gration-Maxfield library was dispersed in a series of sales by Sotheby's in the early 1980s. An excellent, wide-margined, hand-colored example, mild offsetting from plates, a few stray spots, else contents clean, bright, and handsomely bound. Very scarce in commerce and uncommon in institutional collections, with OCLC listing only 10 holdings worlwide. Not in Hardie, Abbey, or Tooley, and only J. Clark (but not this title) mentioned in Prideaux. This anonymous volume of humorous poetry collects 22 works satirizing English eccentrics, among them, the "bounce" (a bullying braggart), the country physician, the slave to fashion, the scholar of dead languages, and old maids and young lovers. The engraver, John Heaviside Clark, was a Scottish painter of seascapes and landscapes active in the first third of the nineteenth century. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. In den WarenkorbQuarto, 10 coloured aquatints; modern half calf, spine gilt-titled. A fine copy of the genuine first and separate issue of this important Australian plate book, the first work to be published on the First Nations people of New South Wales; it was also issued in black and white only. With separate title-page and unnumbered pages,… and with watermarks dated 1811, it is distinct from later editions in which the plates appeared only as a supplement to a larger publication. Clark dedicated his work to the recently deposed William Bligh, with the unusually affectionate comment that it "may assist in keeping alive the recollection of a distant spot, where your exertions for your country, and for the benefit of mankind, have been so eminently displayed". The ten scenes are remarkable in the history of early colonial Australian art, offering good-natured and unprejudiced depictions of First Nations life in an era when pejorative representation was the norm. The scenes include smoking out possums, a kangaroo hunt, spearing birds on the wing, fishing from canoes, a native dance, painted warriors, men in single combat and an idyllic night scene. Delicately hand-coloured and expertly printed, the ten plates "are without question the most attractive and sympathetic of the early British depictions of the native inhabitants" (Wantrup, Australian Rare Books, 2 edn., pp. 367-370). Although the dedication leaf and plates are signed by John Heaviside Clark, he was a commercial artist working in London, turning original sketches into finished drawings ready for the engraving process, and would not have been the artist responsible for the original images, nor for their accompanying text. For decades controversy has surrounded the true identity of the artist of the Aboriginal studies. Wantrup argues for the natural history illustrator John Lewin, attributing the stylistic differences between Lewin's known work and the plates in this volume to the conventions and discretionary modifications made by Clark and his engraver. He maintains that the artist must have experienced prolonged contact with the Aboriginal peoples of the Sydney region to produce studies of such detail, and through a process of elimination leaves Lewin as the only reasonable candidate. Nonetheless, Richard Neville, in his monograph on Lewin, disagrees with this attribution on the basis of stylistic and aesthetic considerations. Whoever the artist, this was "the first Australian coloured plate book properly so called, it is the first separate account of the Aborigines, and it is a fine book in its own right" (op. cit.). The ten plates would reappear in a later printing the following year as a supplement to the larger work Foreign Field Sports, a collection of 100 hunting scenes from cultures across the globe, including Africa, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas. .

In den WarenkorbQuarto, 160 pages letterpress without pagination, 100 handcoloured aquatints, with the 1813 New South Wales supplement bound at rear (this comprising separate title-page, dedication leaf, 10 handcoloured aquatints and 14 letterpress pages); the early issue with watermarks dated 1811 in a handsome contemporary binding of half gre…en russia, spine in compartments with gilt lettering and ornament. One of the outstanding aquatint books of the early nineteenth century, including the remarkable supplementary suite of ten plates depicting life and customs of Australian First Nations people. This is an early issue (with watermarks dated 1811) of the first edition of Foreign Field Sports, a collection of 100 hunting scenes from cultures across the globe, including Africa, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas. This complete edition includes the "Field Sports, &c. &c. Of the Native Inhabitants of New South Wales" separately published by Edward Orme the previous year. It comprises ten plates of Aboriginal hunting and ceremonial scenes with descriptive letterpress, separate title-page and a dedication leaf to Governor Bligh. For decades controversy has surrounded the true identity of the artist of the Aboriginal studies. Wantrup argues convincingly for the natural history illustrator John Lewin, attributing the stylistic differences between Lewin's known work and the plates in this volume to the conventions and discretionary modifications made by Clark and his engraver. He maintains that the artist must have experienced prolonged contact with the Aboriginal peoples of the Sydney region to produce studies of such detail, and through a process of elimination leaves Lewin as the only reasonable candidate. Whoever the artist, this was "the first Australian coloured plate book properly so called, it is the first separate account of the Aborigines, and it is a fine book in its own right" (op. cit.). Foreign Field Sports is also testament to the quality of English colour plate book publishing during the early decades of the nineteenth century, an era that saw other magnificent books such as Ackermann's Microcosm of London. Competition between publishers produced unprecedented technical and artistic excellence, especially in the perfection of professional handcolouring techniques (of which Foreign Field Sports is a paradigm example). These volumes were expensive in their own time, often priced at several guineas a volume, and took pride of place in private book collections. . Joints and extremities rubbed, in the original attractive.

In den Warenkorb8vo. 16 numbered hand-coloured aquatint panels (70 x 200 mm). With 2 sheets of publisher's advertisements. In original cardboard box (163 x 223 mm) with mounted hand-coloured aquatint title-page engraved by Sidney Hall. Curious art toy created by the London bookseller Samuel Leigh, featuring aquatint panels by the noted landscap…e and battle artist John Heaviside Clark (1771-1863), depicting idealized English and Scottish scenery, including ruins, lakes, and mountains. - A "myriorama", a term derived from the Greek words "myrias", meaning "multitude", and "orama", meaning "scene" or "view", comprised a set of illustrated cards, each representing a slice of a landscape. No matter what order you placed them in, the cards created a cohesive scene. The near-endless possibilities made it a popular entertainment for people of all ages. After the success of the first myriorama, designed by Jean-Pierre Brès in France, the toy took off across Europe from the 1820s, sparking imitations in Austria, England, Germany, and the Netherlands. Leigh and Clark adopted the name and the design of the box that housed the cards from the original French version, in hopes of inspiring other artists to draw attractive landscapes. Their myriorama also introduced the innovation of numbering each panel, making it possible to record and later recreate scenes found especially pleasing. Myrioramas provided dynamic visual entertainment at a time when the advent of cinema was still decades away. With their incredible number of possible combinations and charming visuals, myrioramas were "one of the most diversified and exhaustless inventions for variety and pleasing amusement that has hitherto appeared", according to the London's Morning Chronicle at the time. - The present 16-card myriorama can be arranged into an astounding 20,922,789,888,000 (that's 20 trillion!) different scenes. Later myrioramas with larger sets of cards could provide an unfathomable number of permutations, reaching well beyond our standard naming conventions. - Pencil ownership of Isabella Hord to the inside of upper cover. Box somewhat rubbed at extremities; corners lightly bumped; some brownstaining. The panels very well preserved. A copy is held at the Huntington Library in California. A charming item rarely seen at auction.
