Hardcover with dust jacket. Zustand: Sehr gut. XV, 215 p. Schutzumschlag sehr leicht berieben, ca. 10 Seiten mit Bleistiftanstreichungen / Dust jacket very lightly rubbed, approx. 10 pages with pencil markings. - What do Renaissance poetry and painting have in common? What are the social, ideological, and aesthetic bases for the links between them? And what role do those links play in creating the humanistic culture that still has power over us today? These are the questions Clark Hulse takes up in this sophisticated interdisciplinary study of Renaissance aesthetics. Proposing an archeology of artistic knowledge, Hulse examines the theoretical language through which the poets, painters, and patrons of the Renaissance conceived of the relationship between the arts. That language is embedded in what he calls a "rule of art," a specific set of categories, assumptions, and practices that defined the two art forms and the relationship between them. Hulse charts the rise of both forms to the status of liberal arts requiring special intellectual training for artist and patron alike. In the process, he uncovers the history of the practice of theory in the Renaissance, revealing how artistic discourse lived in the world. Beginning with a discussion of the medieval, theologically grounded hierarchy of the arts in which poetics was considered a subdivision of rhetoric, Hulse finds that the discourse of painters remained a form of craft- or shoptalk. He then examines how Alberti used poetic theory to transform the intellectual and social status of painting, rejecting the language of the shop and raising painting to a position of parity with literature. Through Alberti's redefinition of painting, Hulse argues, a new idea of the artwork, a new personality for the artist, and a utopian history of the arts emerged. In the hands of Raphael, Castiglione, and their circle these concepts became deeply enmeshed with disputes over the nature of imitation and with issues of gender and social position. Hulse then shifts to Elizabethan England, demonstrating how Hilliard and Sidney dismantled and reconstructed the discourse of Italian humanism to fit English conditions and purposes. He concludes with Spenser's Shepheardes Calender as the final moment of his inquiry into the relationship of artistic theory to practice and into the value of comparative discourse in both Renaissance and modern criticism. Beautifully illustrated and lucidly written, this innovative study will be of interest to students of literature, art history, and Renaissance studies. / CONTENTS LIST OF ILLUSTRATIONS ACKNOWLEDGMENTS 1 TOWARD A NEW THEORY OF THE ARTS 2 THE RULE OF THE WORD 3 ALBERTI AND HISTORY 4 THE CIRCLE OF RAPHAEL 5 SIDNEY AND HILLIARD 6 BETWEEN THEORY AND PRACTICE NOTES INDEX. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Early Modern Visual CultureRepresentation, Race, and Empire in Renaissance EnglandEdited by Peter Erickson and Clark Hulse'As a picture of what currently might be most profitably studied in the visual culture of early modern England, and of how to conduct scholarship in the field, the volume is exemplary. . . . [It] treats a culture for which there is considerable scholarly interest, but from angles which have been woefully ignored up until now.'--Joseph Koerner, Harvard UniversityAn interdisciplinary group of scholars applies the reinterpretive concept of 'visual culture' to the English Renaissance. Bringing attention to the visual issues that have appeared persistently, though often marginally, in the newer criticisms of the last decade, the authors write in a diversity of voices on a range of subjects. Common among them, however, is a concern with the visual technologies that underlie the representation of the body, of race, of nation, and of empire.Several essays focus on the construction and representation of the human body--including an examination of anatomy as procedure and visual concept, and a look at early cartographic practice to reveal the correspondences between maps and the female body. In one essay, early Tudor portraits are studied to develop theoretical analogies and historical links between verbal and visual portrayal. In another, connections in Tudor-Stuart drama are drawn between the female body and the textiles made by women. A second group of essays considers issues of colonization, empire, and race. They approach a variety of visual materials, including sixteenth-century representations of the New World that helped formulate a consciousness of subjugation; the Drake Jewel and the myth of the Black Emperor as indices of Elizabethan colonial ideology; and depictions of the Queen of Sheba among other black women 'present' in early modern painting. One chapter considers the politics of collecting. The aesthetic and imperial agendas of a Van Dyck portrait are uncovered in another essay, while elsewhere, that same portrait is linked to issues of whiteness and blackness as they are concentrated within the ceremonies and trappings of the Order of the Garter. All of the essays in Early Modern Visual Culture explore the social context in which paintings, statues, textiles, maps, and other artifacts are produced and consumed. They also explore how those artifacts--and the acts of creating, collecting, and admiring them--are themselves mechanisms for fashioning the body and identity, situating the self within a social order, defining the otherness of race, ethnicity, and gender, and establishing relationships of power over others based on exploration, surveillance, and insight.Peter Erickson, of the Clark Art Institute, is author of Patriarchal Structures in Shakespeare's Drama and Rewriting Shakespeare, Rewriting Ourselves.Clark Hulse is Professor of English and Art History at the University of Illinois at Chicago and author of The Rule of Art: Literature and Painting in the Renaissance.New Cultural Studies2000 | 408 pages | 7 x 10 | 133 illus.ISBN 978-0-8122-1734-6 | Paper | $32.50s | £21.50 World Rights | Fine Arts, Cultural Studies, HistoryShort copy:A collection of 10 original essays that explore the social context in which paintings, statues, textiles, maps, and other artifacts were produced and consumed in Renaissance England.
