8vo, pp. xxviii, 317; a bit dust-soiled throughout, including on the title page; deleted inscription at head of leaf a2; well rebound in modern half calf, with morocco label. First edition of a most unusual provincial collection, with a very substantial list of subscribers, including David Garrick (four copies) and Richard Words…worth (the poet's uncle). The presence of David Garrick is not very surprising, since the collection includes a poem eulogising him as the greatest interpreter of Shakespeare (pp. 223-5), and an epigram on a report that he had quit the stage (pp. 45-6); but in fact it seems unlikely that he ever saw his copies, as he died on 20 January 1779. Wordsworth's uncle was also a man likely to subscribe, as he was a prominent citizen of Whitehaven: he was collector of customs in the town, and died in 1794. William Cookson of Penrith Wordsworth's mother's father, and no doubt the man after whom he was named was also a subscriber. Ewan Clark himself came from Wigton, but presumably Whitehaven was the closest centre of printing. Many prominent local figures also subscribed, although there are names from Dublin, Worcester and London also in the list. This collection of poems includes one or two local references and subjects, such as a pastoral elegy on the death of Lady Catherine Lowther and two pastorals in the Cumberland dialect. There are also half a dozen poems based on passages in Sterne, and many on more traditional subjects, such as fables, seasonal odes, poems on angling, beer, women, love and the adventures of a shilling.
