In den WarenkorbHardback. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. 1878. First edition. xxii, 434pp., frontispiece, 125 wood engravings and 13 folding plates, and a 16-page publisher's catalogue dated March 1878 at the end of the book. The full title of this book carries on to describe it as ". embracing a comprehensive history of the system, with an exhaustive analysis of the various modes of traction, including horse power, steam, heated water, and compressed air; a description of the varieties of rolling stock and ample details of cost and working expenses with special reference to the tramways of the United Kingdom". The author was Daniel Kinnear Clark (1822-1896), a Scottish consulting railway engineer. He served as Locomotive Superintendent to the Great North of Scotland Railway between 1853 and 1855, and also wrote comprehensive books on railway engineering matters. He writes in his preface that "The object of this book is mainly to place before engineers, capitalists, and financiers, a succinct analysis of the past practice and the present achievements in tramways in the United Kingdom, as works of engineering, and a money-making concerns." we believe that a second volume on the subject may have been published a few years later, in 1881. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and light soiling to the boards and patches of loss of colour from damp on about 1/2" of the bottom of both boards (most noticeably on the rear board). There is a dent on the fore edge of the front board and the spine ends are bumped. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few scattered light marks from finger smudges. Some pages have faint traces of erased pencil underlining or lines on the fore margin and it is possible that a few lines still remain. A previous owner was a civil engineer in Dublin, and his personal embossed stamp is present on the front free endpaper, frontispiece, title-page and page 1. There is an inscription dated May 1878 on the front free endpaper. The Inscription says something about "Dublin Central Trams ???? Committee" and the is a embossed stamp of a Dublin Civil Engineer.
