Calvin travelled by wagon train from Plano, Illinois to Denver via the Santa Fe Trail in 1859. His sister, Helen, made the journey in 1860 via the Northern Route. [Mattes 1756; Rittenhouse 114]. Calvin's diary is especially strong on describing the sights and scenes of Colorado, with suggestions for equipment for the trip. He visited a number of the gold fields. Helen's account was recorded en route on scraps of paper. It reflects the little details of the trip, the people etc. from a feminine perspective. The natives, regularly encountered along the route, were amused at the Bloomers she wore.…
