Henry Stebbing was rector at Rickinhhill, Suffolk and late fellow of St Katharine's College, Cambridge.Full brown leather gilt lined on covers, 5 raised band at unlettered spine. Sl rubbing, faint wear at spine ends text very clean; very good.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. 2 volumes. Hardcover, bound in full leather. Both volumes are showing signs of age. Leather is darkened almost to black, corners bumped, hinges cracked (cords still secure). First volume has much chipping and peeling to the spine. Most of the leather is still there, but unpeeled. 464 + 20 pages (with its own title page, dated 1704). Second volume contains, "Eleven Sermons Preached upon Several Occasions and a Paraphrase." 296 pages + 208 pages (the Paraphrase, with separate title page). Both volume have the name I. Phelipps Y on the front cover. This is the binding of the Rev John Phelipps, whose books seem to be scattered all over ABE and Sothebys, etc. Text blocks tight, but bindings worn. Binding with shelf wear, rubbing to edges and corners of boards; joints starting; some leather absent at head and tail of spine; text block slightly age-toned and foxed; scattered annotations in ink. "The summ of a conference on Feb. 21. 1686. between Dr. Clagett, and Father Gooden, about the point of transubstantiation" has separate dated title page and pagination; register is continuous. Collated: errata leaf (dated Jan. 7 1686) facing the title-page, title-page with with blank verso, then 123pp printed text. The first edition of Clagett's riposte to John Goter who was imprisoned shortly after this book was published. The author's name has been mis-spelled as 'Clagget' on the spine . [CONDITION: The binding is in VERY GOOD condition, just a little rubbing to the spine with a slight 1.5 cm surface crack to the front hinge at the bottom edge. Internally the errata leaf, title-page, and last leaf blank verso are slightly dusty, otherwise the text leaves are entirely clean and only faintly tanned. A very nice and sturdy copy ] . . . First edition. Pamphet. Disbound. Title, preface, a dedication to the Queen Regent (written by "the Maids of St Joseph") the text of the prerogatives. This is in fact an anti-catholic pamphlet from William Clagett. William Clagett (16461688) was an English clergyman and pamphleteer, particularly active during the reign of James II. As well as his own pamphlets, he would translate particularly colourful Continental Catholic material, with the aim of making the Catholics an object of ridicule. This is one of those pieces. A nice copy of this pamphlet. Apart from a a few slight marks, the pamphlet is clean and crisp throughout and well bound together.[ii] i-xv, [i], [vi], 1-20. pp. WING A108.

Pamphlet. A contemporary account / bibliography of the tracts and pamphlets published by both sides. Most of these were anonymous, and there are marginalia which name the author in most cases in a contemporary hand. Title, text, errata. The errata has been crossed out, and the corrections listed have been made by hand in the text. Clagett was particularly close friends with his eventual successor at Gray's Inn, William Wake, the future archbishop of Canterbury. Clagett saw through the press Wake's "The present state" while Wake was lying low in Dorchester, leading to its sometimes being erroneously credited to Clagett (including by Wing, who referenced it as C4390). The title leaf is detached and a little grubby. The text shows some light staining in places and has some marginal ink notes, the first few leaves are partially detached at the top, everything else is well bound together. Wake, William (16571737), became Archbishop of Canterbury. He was originally from Blandford Forum in Dorset, and became a convinced Anglican after spending time in France. He wrote many tracts opposing Catholicism. William Clagett (16461688) was an English clergyman and pamphleteer, particularly active during the reign of James II, when he was very anti-catholic. 1-40 pp. Wing C4390.
