Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. First (only) edition. Fine copy in fine dust jacket. William Golden (1911-1959) was an influential graphic designer who spent his career with the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS), first creating materials for marketing radio and then making the transition to television. His most iconic design is the eye that became the symbol of CBS Television. This volume was produced as a posthumous tribute. It deals almost exclusively with his work for television. Cipe Pineles (Vienna 1908-USA 1991) remarried, becoming the second wife of Will Burtin (Cologne 1908-USA 1972), a widower. Burtin had fled Germany with his wife to avoid creating propaganda for the Nazis. Both Pineles and Burtin were influential graphic designers in their own right. Accompanying the book are two oversized, highly individual postcards sent by them to Joe Kaufman, also a graphic designer, and his wife. The book and correspondence came from his library. Also included is a copy in wrappers of a memorial tribute to Golden. Front wrapper of this brochure is detached, otherwise it is in good condition. Priority Mail only on foreign orders.

Painted Boards. Zustand: Very Good. A lovely, fragile, one-of-a-kind handmade book by Cipe Pineles (1908-1991), the renowned Austrian-born graphic designer and art director who oversaw --or at the very least played a major role in-- the art departments of Seventeen, Charm, Glamour, House & Garden, Vanity Fair and Vogue. As the first female art director at a number of these magazines, Pineles enjoyed a groundbreaking, even an historic rise in the design and art worlds. Examples of her own work --specifically her handmade books-- rarely come onto the market but, when they do, they show a delicacy and a whimsy, outdone only by the obvious talent that comes through on each page. This early handbook of Cipe's, called "On It's Nice to Be Married" and created in 1942, celebrates her marriage to her first husband William Golden, himself a star in the graphic design world (having designed the CBS "eye" logo). In this tale. Bill Golden is a soldier stationed in Europe and Cipe tracks him down to have them repledge their vows. Only 7 pgs. of actual text (each painted in a beautiful watercolor) plus wonderful handpainted endsheets and pastedowns. Thin octavo, solid and VG to VG+ in its handpainted boards, with very light soiling to the panels. A diamond in the Cipe Pineles canon, one of the very few handmade books to have emerged from her estate.
