Dal 1955 al 1960 è attivo nel circolo fotografico ?La Gondola? di Venezia  Nel 1962 partecipa come fotografo di scena al film ?Gli Ultimi? di Vito Pandolfi e Padre David Maria Turoldo. Ha tenuto circa 120  mostre personali e circa altrettante collettive in Italia e all'estero. Le sue opere sono state esposte in gallerie d'arte internazionale a New York, Parigi, Londra e Mosca. Ha collaborato con importanti case editrici e ha all'attivo la realizzazione di oltre duecento volumi fotografici.  Molte sue fotografie sono presenti in collezioni private e in istituzioni pubbliche, come il Metropolitan Museum of Art di New York e il Victoria and Albert Museum di Londra. Nel dicembre 2001 il New York Times gli ha dedicato uno spazio nella sezione Arts and Leisure. Book.
