In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. 1st Edition. Excellent condition book in decent but heavily chipped dustjacket. Honestly remarkable how well intact and bright the book itself is with just the slightest shelfwear at the extremities of the boards and with an immaculate interior, containing illustrations by the great Arthur Rackham. The dustjacket is now preserved in mylar - it has a nearly fully intact front panel, with some chipping at the upper edge and some small closed tears, rubing and creasing elsewhere. The spine is heavily chipped, missing about 1/2 of the length of it although wonderfully maintaining most of the title of the book, author info, and the small illustration - the publisher tag at the very bottom is present although detatched but placed within the mylar where it would have been. Back panel has 2 very large chips at the bottom, a small piece missing towards the top, and a large and small chip at the top edge, in addition to some rubbing and creasing. Overall a nice copy though .…

In den WarenkorbFirst edition of Morley's classic canine story, wonderfully illustrated by Arthur Rackham. Quarto, original publisher's cloth, top edge gilt, pictorial endpapers, illustrated with four color plates and numerous line drawings by Arthur Rackham. In very good condition with light rubbing to the crown and foot of the spine. A nice example. "Morley admirably creates a canine world through names alone. There are Mike Terrier, the curate Mr. J. Rover Poodle, the upper-class and working-class neighbors Mrs. Airedale and Mrs. Collie, the nursemaid Mrs. Spaniel and little Shaggy, her puppy, Gissing's adopted puppies Groups, Bunks, and Yelpers, haughty Mr. and Mrs. Chow and their "intolerably spotless" little Sandy, the landlady Mrs. Purps, the salesclerk Miss Whippet, the matronly Mrs. Mastiff, the compulsive shopper Mrs. Dachshund, the parishioners Mr. Dobermann-Pinscher, Mrs. Griffon, and Mrs. Retriever. There are the place names like Dalmatian Heights and the little shrine of St. Spitz. These are intermixed with humanless real locales like Paris and Atlantic City, Murray Hill and Fifth Avenue and Broadway and Wall Street, Delmonico s Restaurant and Trinity Church, and real historical personages like the Grimm brothers, Hans Christian Andersen, and Masefield; to make this our real world only inhabited by dogs, rather than some imaginary planet of dogs" (Fred Patten).…

Quarto (11 x 7 3/4 in; 281 x 200 mm.). x, [2,], 227, [1, blank] pp. With four color-plates including frontispiece, and sixteen line drawings. Quarter black buckram over cream paper boards. Spine tooled in gilt., top edge gilt. Partially unopened. Bookplate on front pastedown. Where the Blue Begins is a delightful cross between a satire on polite society and a fable about finding meaning in life. American author, Christopher Morley uses anthropomorphized dogs to tell his thought-provoking tale about a bachelor dog named Gissing, who leaves his life in the suburban Canine Estates and sets out on an existential quest. The story appeared two years after Morley's collection of humorous essays, Pipefuls. What breed of dog was Gissing? Read the story and find out. Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) is perhaps the most acclaimed and influential illustrator of the Golden Age of Illustration. A prolific artist even from his youth, Rackham got his start as an illustrator working for the Westminster Budget Newspaper (1892). Over the next few years, he took on more and more commissions for children's books, hitting his career high in the first three decades of the twentieth century. Rackham turned his imaginative pen to every classic-from Shakespeare to Dickens to Poe. Latimore and Haskell, p. 60. Riall, p.154. Near Fine. Signed.…
