Editor's presentation inscription and his mounted photograph on front endpapers; also signed by him on title page. 8vo; original blue boards; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; pp. 256; photographs in text. A little curl to dustwrapper edges, and its spine slightly sunned. Very good condition. "Montie Carlisle married his beloved Kitty only three months before the outbreak of the First World War. From the time he joined the Northumberland Fusiliers in September 1914, until after the end of the war, whenever they were apart he wrote to her every day. These letters describe his training at Belton Park, Grantham, and the journey to Suvla Bay in the Dardanelles, where he was wounded. He went out again to the Middle East in 1916, and then to the Somme campaign, where he was severely wounded. In 1918 he returned to France for the final months of the War as a Staff Officer. After Kitty died in 1979, Christopher Carlisle discovered almost 500 of his father's letters and noticed several written in August 1914. During the following years, he found much of interest in them, not only as a war record, but also as a social history, because although none of Kitty's letters to Montie survive, her own life is reflected in his comments on her letters to him. The letters in addition show the character development of Montie, from an inexperienced Second Lieutenant to a battle-hardened (but always sympathetic) Staff Officer.".

In den WarenkorbZustand: Fine. Facsimile Reprint of the 1818 edition. Hardback. Set ISBN: 1855069563. Single volume only. Nicholas Carlisle (1771 -1847) entered the Naval Service before becoming Secretary to the Society of Antiquaries in Somerset and dedicating his time to a series of long, detailed and useful compilations. Between 1808 and 1813 he produced topographical dictionaries of England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland. In 1818 he published the pioneering work "A Concise Description of the Endowed Grammar Schools in England and Wales". He subsequently indexed the journal "Archaeologia" and the first 14 reports of the charity commissioners, and was for a time a commissioner himself. The Charity Commission was proposed in 1816 by Henry Brougham (later Lord Chancellor), and its reports, beginning in 1819, form an important source for the history of 19th-century education. Carlisle pre-empted the Charity Commission with the publication of this major work which attempted to give an account of all the grammar schools in England and Wales. To compile this work Carlisle had sent out a circular to all schools asking for information which he then edited into book form. In total Carlisle gives historical and statistical information on some 475 schools, and though he started to compile a second edition to include the schools which had been omitted or which had not replied, this revised version never saw the light of day before his death in 1847. The work originally arose from Carlisle 's interests in heraldry and topography and it is suitably decorated with 68 engravings depicting school seals. There is no comparable contemporary work of documentary information on British schools and this makes it a key and unique resource for the study of the history of education just prior to the Victorian era. Fine and unread. No jacket.

Erstausgabe
Zustand: Near fine. First Edition. Complete run of one of the rarest and more unusual journals of the mimeo revolution. NEWSPAPER published seventeen issues from editor Green's Village apartment between 1957 and 1965, at which point Green ceased publication and refunded his subscribers. Best remembered today for almost single-handedly establishing the reputation of William Gaddis' THE RECOGNITIONS through Green's thorough and devastating deconstruction of the novel's negative reviews (originally published in Newspaper 12-14, reprinted as FIRE THE BASTARDS in 1992), as well as (most infamously) his 1962 full-page ad in the VILLAGE VOICE extolling the work's virtues, Green's eccentric journal also covered topics as diverse as Joyce and Faulkner, voting and peyote, William Reich (frequently), and insurance. "[P]art conceptual art, part political tract, and part 'zine [.] 'Green' used his underground tabloid for cultural commentary and deliciously satirical (yet superbly well-documented) assaults" (Clay and Phillips p. 77). A very fragile production of which not many survived; this is among the finest we've seen. Individual issues are scarce (we've handled only a handful in almost 15 years of looking), and runs of any kind rare. Ephemeral and elusive. 14'' x 8.5''. Top-stapled legal-sized mimeo. All issues heavily toned as usual, with some minor chipping to edges of some issues. One issue had two illustrations tipped onto the front page: both present, but glue tender. About half the issues unfolded (typically not so) and very clean. [WITH]: rare example of one of Green's occasional one-page "supplements," which summarizes previous issues and provides ordering information. Overall a sound set of a very fragile production.
