This study examines themes and strategies in Elizabeth Bowen's last four novels and her post-World War II short stories. It includes brief presentations and plot summaries of her works within the context of her life. Bowen began her literary career in the 1920s, during a time of flourishing English novels and the rising recognition of the short story. From 1927 to 1938, she published six novels, but the pressures of World War II led to an eleven-year gap before her acclaimed wartime novel, The Heat of the Day (1949). This work, a blend of romance, spy narrative, and psychological thriller, set the stage for her subsequent novels in the 1950s and 1960s, which explore identity, communication, the passage of time, and the influence of the dead on the living. Earlier criticism often overlooked these later novels, with A World of Love (1955) deemed outmoded, and The Little Girls (1964) and Eva Trout (1968) puzzling to critics. However, recent appreciation for these works, particularly the innovative strategies in the latter two, has led to a reevaluation of their contribution to Bowen's literary reputation.…

Between 1927 and 1938 she published six full-length novels; it was largely the pressures of the Second World War that then caused eleven years to elapse before she brought out her much acclaimed novel of wartime London, 'The Heat of the Day' (1949). This novel, a medley of romance, spy-story and psychological thriller, anticipated the three novels Bowen went on to write in the 1950s and 1960s, which are all concerned with problems of identity and communication; all deal with the passing of time and the influence of the dead on the living, and all demonstrate the dangers of looking into the past for a present-day sense of security and identity. Christensen examines some aspects of theme and strategy in the last four novels, glancing also at Bowen's post-war stories.
