Soon thereafter Sultan Mehmet began building the Topkapi Serai as a symbol of his enhanced power, and this fabled pa lace, much altered and expanded, still dominates the skyline. Significant develo pment, however, commenced in the 18th century, during a prosperous and lighthear ted era known as the Tulip Period, when members of the ruling elite constructed wooden mansions, or yalis. Their architecture is unique to Istanbul, and their b eautiful red, yellow, pink, or green facades are still reflected in the waters o f the Bosporus.During the 19th century, Ottoman architectural conventions were adapted to ideas imported from Europe, and Istanbul took on a more cosmopo litan appearance. A Turkish baroque style, often embellished with rococo decorat ions, is evident in many of the palaces of this period. Some 19th century sultan s had a penchant for classical statements of imperial power, and their architect s introduced styles based on Greco-Roman aesthetics. Other foreign influences we re also felt and interpreted, with surprising results such as an art nouveau Egy.
