Very good. - Over 55 words typed on his 10-1/2 inch high by 8 inch wide "Congress of the United States" stationery, with a 22 word autograph postscript penned by him. A former medical missionary to China, the keynote speaker at the 1960 Republican National Convention,… Congressman Walter H. Judd writes to a supporter, "It was good of you to write so appreciatively regarding my speech at the Chicago convention. If you thought what I said was right and helpful, I am happy indeed." A supporter of Taiwan's Chiang Kai-Shek, Judd's passionate speech at the Convention focused strongly on foreign policy and the Cold War as well as efforts to fight international communism. Signed "Walter H. Judd" with a postscript in his hand "Sorry for the delay - Sorry you are not yet old enough to vote. But glad to know you are going to work". Folded for mailing with some slight staining to the lower right edge. Very good, together with the original mailing envelope. The physician and U.S. Congressman from Minnesota Walter Henry Judd (1898-1994) served as a medical missionary in China from 1925 to 1931. Assisting Edward Bliss, he worked in a small clinic before becoming head of a large hospital in a large city. He came to be known as I-te Chou to his Chinese patients and friends. He returned to the U.S. to work at the Mayo Clinic before going back to China in 1934. On his return to the U.S. in 1938, he encouraged support of China against Japanese invasion. Elected to Congress in 1943, he fought to define the conservative position on China to support Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists against Mao's Communists. Influenced by his position viz-a-viz China, Judd's keynote speech at the 1960 Republican National Convention focused on foreign policy and the Cold War.
