Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The VIIIth International Congress of the International Primatological Society was held from 7 through 12 July 1980 in Florence, Italy, under the auspices of the host institution, the Istituto di Antropologia of the University of Florence. More than 3…00 papers and abstracts were pre sented either at the main Congress or in 14 pre-Congress symposia the week earlier (so scheduled to avoid conflicting with either the main invited lectures or the contributed paper sessions). The texts of these main lectures, plus reports from the organizers on results of the pre-Congress symposia, form this volume. The main lec turers were invited to provide comprehensive coverage of the latest devel opments in major subfie1ds of Primatology, by the leading researchers in those areas. In this way it was planned that the Congress would pro vide up-to-date reviews of recent progress, and prospects for future progress, that a biennial International Congress should include as one of its primary functions. The organizers of individual pre-Congress symposia interspersed their summaries among the main lectures, providing the basic details of exist ing theories, new data, and whatever consensus could be reached con cerning their particular topic. In keeping with what is probably the most urgent theme of these congresses, we included in this primary volume some extra material in the area-of primate conservation to augment the main lecturer's treatment. We acknowledge all the personnel of the Institute of Anthropology, Florence, and all other volunteers for their assistance.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Can the concept of culture be applied validly to another species This paper first reports (as a case study) a kind of grooming shown by wild chimpanzees which seems to be a truly social custom. The example serves to introduce the practical pitfalls a…nd potentials of seeking to answer the question posed. Next, the paper focuses on a type of tool-use, hammer-and-anvil, which varies across populations and has important archaeological implications. Broadening further, an exhaustive catalogue of habitual tool-use across all known field-studies is presented. Finally, the evidence of regional and local patterns of tool use by wild chimpanzees is assessed. The paper then turns to mechanisms of cultural processes, especially innovation, before ending with responses to recent criticisms by the 'anti-culturalists'. If concepts such as culture are to help us understand the behavior of our nearest relations, we must avoid simplistic and sloppy extrapolation. Two long-term field studies of wild chimpanzees have proceeded in parallel in western Tanzania, and most of the published knowledge of the natural behavior of individual chimpanzees comes from these. Goodall's (1986) research group in the Gombe National Park has focussed on the Kasakela community of chimpanzees. The project begun by the African Primate Expedition at Kasoje in the Mahale Mountains, initially under the direction of Itani and later of Nishida (1968, 1990), focussed first on K Group, then later on M Group.

This volume consists of the contributed papers on primate evolu tionary biology, primarily functional morphology, evolution, and pale ontology. This is a coherent (though broad) and important sub field of primatology. We have thus focused the subject, in agreement with the publishers, to help ensure a successful and useful volume, befitting these very current contributions from the biennal meeting of the Inter national Primatological Society. Furthermore, we have compiled this volume in a fairly unprecedented manner for congress proceedings. In view of space and budget limitations, and the need to guarantee a high-quallty book with appeal for specialists, we subjected all manuscript to a four-stage internal review process and selected only the best 13 of 31. This rejection rate of 58% compares with the more discriminating reviewed scholarly journals. Too often primatological or anthropological proceedings have been heterogeneous, large, unselective volumes that, at least recently, have repeatedly lost money for the publishing house (in sometimes spectacular amounts).
