He gives a 22-line transcription of 'the extract [] from my vol[um]e. on Lead, p.177, published in 1870', headed 'Refining or Cupellation'.…

He gives a 'Thousand thanks' for Chepmell's 'kind letter - all the more welcome from a real kind friend whom I have so much to thank that I am at a loss to know how I ever can show it. 2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged. He begins by thanking him for his 'kind note and ticket for the Private View at the Academy'. He explains that he 'must pay a visit to the Home Office at noon to report myself', and from there he will find his way to Burlington House. He hopes 'to learn from Mr Childers or one of the Under-secretaries when there is a likelihood of a day being fixed by the Queen for dubbing knights, and am in hopes that it may not be far distant, as I don't wish to be kept here for any lengthened time.' He explains that he came up to London 'on Genl. Elkington's [John Elkington (1830-1880)] our Governor's recommendation, who is to present me at the Levee on Monday next'. The following day he will dine with the Chepmells.…

He thanks him for the letter containing the information 'as to the condition of Madame de Arcos', and says he 'took the liberty of showing it to The Queen, who was much concerned about her illness at Osborne, and who is very glad to hear that you find she is going on satisfactorily'. He finds her 'a most exemplary patient, and it is quite a pleasure to deal with a lady of her type, especially in a case when one cant do much'.…

In The Friends of Voltaire (1906), Hall penned the rallying cry for the freedom of speech 'I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it', which is often misattributed to Voltaire himself. 4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. In an attempt to place a quotation for Chepmell she has consulted her 'note books on Galiani', to no avail. 'I have, I find, jotted down the words in French, I cannot read Italian I am sorry to say but as if the expression was his own, not a quotation from Dante or anyone else.' She has also 'looked through Sainte Beuve's Essay to see if there is any allusion', but fears that she is 'of no use'. She will send him her 'article on Galiani when it appears I do not quite know when that will be'. She hopes he will be 'merciful to my many shortcomings & ignorances in dealing with him'. She considers her 'knowledge of the eighteenth century [] a very superficial thing compared with yours'. 'It would really be an education to me, as well as a great pleasure, if you would allow me to "Saunter" there with you for an hour or so next time I come to Hurst.' She thanks him for a recommendation, regarding which she has 'asked the London Library to send [] a few volumes'. She ends with a reference to Vauvenargues: 'He greatly fascinates me both as a writer & a human being.'.…
