First edition in German, a translation of Nouvelle methode pour diviser les instruments de mathematique et d'astronomie, 1768. The 6th Duke of Chaulnes (1714-1769), a French astronomer-physicist who was particularly interested in scientific instruments. He observed the transit of Venus in 1761, Paris. "His love for optics and astronomy led to attempts to improve the construction of astronomical instruments." In 1755 he presented to the Academie a piece on rendering instruments of a small radius more accurate. "The substance of this memoir was published in the Academy's . . ." reports. A second paper in the same volume also dealt with the same topic. In 1767 he added remarks on the achromatic telescope. Here for the first time, he applied the microscope to measurement of refractive lenses. In this work, he describes the production of a special microscope, apparently to be built in England. At one time he built the largest electrostatic machine, used to reproduce and demonstrate for the first time in France, the effects of lightening. In 1743 he became an honorary member of the Academie des sciences (Paris). Collated, complete.This work details the monument known as the Well of Birds, in Saqqara, which was used as a tomb for sacred animals.The author, Louis Joseph d'Albert, 6th Duke of Chaulnes, travelled to Egypt in 1763, on a trip to try and produce accurate drawings of monuments which had previously been undescribed or poorly described. In this work, he details his attempts to make plaster casts of the hieroglyphs, though his attempts were fruitless. Disbound, with a small amount of paper retained to the backstrip. Internally, firmly bound, the folding map is working loose. Pages are age-toned and generally clean, with scattered spots and handling marks. Light edge wear and spots to the folding map. First printing of Chaulne's memoir on carbon dioxyde to which Cavendish referred "The Duc de Chaulnes, in a paper communicated in December 1775, described experiments on fixed air made 1771-73, including its acid reaction and the formation of a crystaline salt (potassium bicarbonate) by the action of fixed air on solutions of potassium carbonate and hydroxide." (Partington III, p. 317).

Uncut copy with large margins of this work describing and depicting a microscope and several measuring devises (micromètres). The Duc de Chaulnes was a member of the ??Académie des Sciences??, interested in physics, mechanics and especially optics and this paper is one the works he wrote on this subject. He died the year after the publication of this paper.
