In contemporary blue paper wraps, neatly rebacked paper spine, 50 un-coloured engraved views, lacks titlepage, a few leaves trimmed within lower plate mark, stab sew to inner margin. Per ESTC, A reimpression of the octavo edition of 1750; the plates have be…en numbered, and the date removed from them; some now bear the imprint: London: printed for Robt. Sayer, oblong 15.6*9.5 cms. Rarely seen on the open market. (ESTC T144299). Please contact for the full plate list. The work consists of small views of churches and villages that surrounded early Georgian London; these include, among others, Chelsea, Battersea, Highgate, Hampstead, Barnes, Kew, and St Pancras. The views were the work of the topographical draughtsman Jean Chatelain (1710-1758), and engraved by James Roberts (1725-1799), most probably Henry's brother. The set was first published by Henry Roberts in around 1750 under the title: 'Fifty small original, and elegant views of the most splendid churches, villages, rural prospects. and masterly pieces of architecture, adjacent to London'. The present example can be dated to around 1775 as eight of the views bear the imprint of Robert Sayer. Sayer and his business partner John Bennett had acquired the plates sometime before 1775, as they appear in their sales catalogue of that year under the title: 'Fifty Views of Villages, &c. from the most agreeable Prospects near London,drawn by the celebrated M. Chatelain, may be had in the following Numbers, for the Amusement of Youth in drawing after Nature. Priced 6d. each'. The catalogue divides the views into eight numbered sections: the first three containing views of villages to the south and west; numbers 4 and 5 villages to the west and north; 6 and 7 north and east; and 8 the south; with the view at the beginning of each section bearing the imprint of Robert Sayer. We are only able to trace four complete examples, which bear the Sayer imprint: The New York Historical Society; the Folger Shakespeare Library; and the Yale Institute of British Art. The present example, without the title page - which would appear to never have been bound in with the present set -conforms to the example in the British Library; both the Folger, and N.Y.H.S. example bear a printed title page; with the Yale example bearing a title in manuscript. 0. The French engraver François Vivares (1709-1780) set up shop in London at the age of 18. François Vivares engraved some 160 plates, most of which were published by John Boydell. He helped alter the trade imbalance between Britain and France in engravings and initiated an English tradition in the art form. A former engraver himself, Boydell promoted the interests of artists as well as patrons and as a result his business prospered. Boydell apprenticed himself to William Henry Toms, an artist he admired, and learned engraving. He established his own business in 1746 and published his first book of engravings around the same time. Boydell did not think much of his own artistic efforts and eventually started buying the works of others, becoming a print dealer as well as an artist. He became a successful importer of French prints during the 1750s but was frustrated by their refusal to trade prints in kind. To spark reciprocal trade, he commissioned William Wollett's spectacular engraving of Richard Wilson's The Destruction of the Children of Niobe, which revolutionized the print trade. Ten years later, largely as a result of Boydell's initiative, the trade imbalance had shifted, and he was named a fellow of the Royal Society for his efforts. In the 1790s, Boydell began a large Shakespeare venture that included the establishment of a Shakespeare Gallery, the publication of an illustrated edition of Shakespeare's plays, and the release of a folio of prints depicting scenes from Shakespeare's works. Some of the most illustrious painters of the day contributed, such as Benjamin West and Henry Fuseli. Chatelain, whose name is often spelled "Chatelin" under engravings, was employed by publisher John Boydell in London, and with François Vivares produced a number of landscape engravings after works by masters such as Rembrandt. To boost sales, Boydell often capitalized on Vivares' popularity and credited him on plates engraved by Chatelain alone. The French engraver François Vivares (1709-1780) set up shop in London at the age of 18. François Vivares engraved some 160 plates, most of which were published by John Boydell. The intermediary draftsman Joseph Goupy (French, ca. 1700-1782) also collaborated on this and the other two Chatelain engravings currently for sale on Arts and Object Marketplace. John Boydell (1720 - 1804) was an English publisher noted for his reproductions of engravings. He helped alter the trade imbalance between Britain and France in engravings and initiated an English tradition in the art form. A former engraver himself, Boydell promoted the interests of artists as well as patrons and as a result his business prospered. Boydell apprenticed himself to William Henry Toms, an artist he admired, and learned engraving. He established his own business in 1746 and published his first book of engravings around the same time. Boydell did not think much of his own artistic efforts and eventually started buying the works of others, becoming a print dealer as well as an artist. He became a successful importer of French prints during the 1750s but was frustrated by their refusal to trade prints in kind. To spark reciprocal trade, he commissioned William Wollett's spectacular engraving of Richard Wilson's The Destruction of the Children of Niobe, which revolutionized the print trade. Ten years later, largely as a result of Boydell's initiative, the trade imbalance had shifted, and he was named a fellow of the Royal Society for his efforts. In the 1790s, Boydell began a large Shakespeare venture that included the establishment of a Shakespeare Gallery, the publication of an illustrated edition of Shakespeare's plays, and the release of a folio of prints depicting scenes from Shakespeare's works. Some of the most illustrious painters of the day contributed, such as Benjamin West and Henry Fuseli. Four Boydell engravings of Shakespeare plays are currently for sale on Art and Object Marketplace. The two-volume Boydell Shakespeare folio set is currently available for sale on Second Story Books' website. Throughout his life, Boydell dedicated time to civic projects: he donated art to government institutions and ran for public office. In 1790 he became Lord Mayor of London. The French Revolutionary Wars led to a cessation in Continental trade at the end of the 1790s. Without this business, Boydell's firm declined and he was almost bankrupt at his death in 1804. 1375214. One of the earliest printed detailed charts of Java Large folding engraved map on two sheets joined. The important VOC controlled island of Java, with extensive explanatory text in panels on either side and in banners along the top edge, an inset of Le Port de Batavia appears lower left. The Chatelains based their maps on the wo…rk of contemporary and earlier cartographers and travel writers, and the current map is based on Hadriaan Reland's map, which was not published by the Dutch until Johannes van Keulen, issued it as 'Insulae Iavae pars Occidentalis edente Hadriano Relando' in 1728. VOC knowledge of the southern coastline of Java was only extended much later in 1739, when Paulus Paulusz, master-kaartenmaker in Batavia at the time, led an expedition there.

Publ…ished in the fifth volume of the Châtelain family's 'Atlas historique, ou Nouvelle introduction à l'Histoire, à la Chronologie & à la Géographie Ancienne et Moderne', 1719, which eventually extended to 7 volumes. The Chatelains based their maps on the work of contemporary and earlier cartographers and travel writers, and the current map is based on the Jaillot - Mortier map derived from accounts of the French Jesuit mission to Siam in 1685-86. Huguenot pastor Henri Abraham Chatelain (16841743) was born in Paris, but moved across Europe as religious hostilities increased under Louis XIV. Throughout the early decades of the seventeenth century, Chatelain worked with his father, Zacharie (died 1723), and later his son, also Zacharie (16901754), to publish a number of influential maps and books. Chatelain's drafted his own original maps, which conveyed the breadth of his historical and geographical knowledge through their ethnographic, heraldic and cosmographic details. From 1705 to 1720, the Chatelain family published the monumental 'Atlas historique, ou nouvelle introduction à l'histoire, à la chronologie & à la géographie ancienne et moderne' in seven volumes, which included 285 engraved maps, views, plans, tables, heraldic and genealogical charts. While Henri Chatelain himself was responsible for the plates, the extensive accompanying text was compiled by historian Nicholas Gueudeville-Garillon, and included a supplement by polymath Henri Philippe de Limiers. Chatelain based his maps on the work of contemporary and earlier cartographers and travel writers, including Guillaume Delisle and Nicholas Sanson.
