Previously owned by Chastain White (1823-1879), who intermittently represented Hanover County in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1850-1854, and in the State Senate from 1855-1858; with his signature on the front endpaper. Interestingly enough, the documents addressing this are notably conciliatory, saying "Virginia earnestly and affectionately appeals to her sister state of South Carolina to desist from any meditated secession," and "the people of this state are unwilling to take any action [.] calculated to destroy the integrity of this Union." Foxing, with scattered markings in pencil by 'Daisy Gray,' practicing her handwriting on the endpapers and few title pages. Lacking the top third of the last two leaves of Doc. no. 62; lacking the title page of Doc. no. 50; with a duplicate copy of Doc. no. 42, and lacking the duplicate title page only; lacking Doc. no. 14; lacking the text of Doc. no. 31, and loss to the top third of the final leaf of Doc. no. 25; lacking the final leaf of the index. Scattered dampstaining. Front joint cracked but holding well. Rear board discretely reattached by a conservator. Some surface loss to the marbled paper covered boards. Half calf over marbled paper, with a red leather label. (Library of Congress "Compromise of 1850: Primary Documents in American History" ). Good binding.…
