Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'The Romance of Greeting Cards' is a comprehensive historical exploration into the evolution of printed sentiment and social customs. This work meticulously traces the development of greeting cards from their earliest primitive forms to the sophisticated engraved and printed versions of the early twentieth century. The text delves into the fascinating origins of holiday staples such as Christmas cards and Valentines, examining how artistic trends, technological advancements, and shifting social etiquette shaped these enduring tokens of affection and remembrance.Through detailed accounts, the work highlights the transformation of the greeting card industry and the changing aesthetics of social stationery across different eras. Readers will find a wealth of information regarding the craftsmanship involved in creating these ephemeral treasures, as well as the cultural significance they hold as markers of human connection and tradition. From the intricate lace-paper designs of the mid-nineteenth century to the bold graphic styles of the 1920s, 'The Romance of Greeting Cards' serves as an essential reference for collectors, designers, and historians interested in the intersection of art, commerce, and the history of communication. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. In den WarenkorbMap. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Folded map, measuring 28 in. x 21 in. First edition of a fabulous map of Alaska crafted by Ernest Dudley Chase, and published for the Alaska News Agency in Anchorage, Alaska, printed the year Alaska officially became one of the United States, with dozens of graphics, portraits, informational insets, a list of towns with matching keys, industries which make up the economy, natural wonders, founders, mountain ranges, historical buildings, miniature scenes of sites of extraordinary beauty, facts about the landscape (tundra, islands), small villages and native populations, wildlife, natural resources, and devices to convey the scale and size of this landmass and its waterways, peninsulas and islands. Orange, black and white -- just a lovely (and lovingly crafted) piece of work! Just one or two little cracks at creases, but overall map in beautiful condition. Ernest Dudley Chase (1878-1966) decided -- at age 49 -- that he wanted cease his postcard and greeting card business in order to make maps. Chase became especially known for his pictorial maps, which were deeply researched, faithfully rendered, exquisitely detailed, and often with varying degrees of whimsicality, depending upon the subject. During his career he created over fifty maps, including but not limited to, depictions of the U.S., Boston, Nazi Germany, The British Isles, Italy, Switzerland, Spain and Portugal, WW II Atlantic/Indian Oceans; Pacific Battle Map, Total War Battle Map, and even one entitled "World Wonders".…

In den WarenkorbVery good. Slight uneven toning in margins. Size 27.25 x 20 Inches. An attractive pictorial map of South America, produced in 1942 by Ernest Dudley Chase and printed by Rand McNally for Moore-McCormack Lines, a shipping company that ran regular passenger service between New York and South America. A Closer Look Incredibly detailed and beautifully illustrated, Chase highlights the wide array of flora and fauna that call South America home alongside its most spectacular natural and man-made sites. Illustrations of animals, including the condor, anteater, sloth, macaw, toucan, iguana, and chinchilla, fill the continent. South American's other natural riches, such as Brazil's diamonds and emeralds, the rubber found in the Amazon, oil, cacao, and tea are also promoted. Cities and towns are labeled throughout, including Sao Paulo, Caracas, Bogota, Quito, La Paz, Lima, Montevideo, Buenos Aires, and Santiago. Each of these cities, along with many others, are also identified by illustrations of famous buildings, or, in the case of Rio de Janeiro, Copacabana Beach. Circular vignettes appear along all four borders and highlight famous buildings from across the continent, the majority of which are churches. Others illustrate world famous sites, such as Machu Picchu, Iguazu Falls, and the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. A portrait of Simón Bolívar is included below the title cartouche with a caption celebrating the liberation movement that he instigated from Colombia to Chile. The route of Moore-McCormack's ships outbound from New York and returning from South America are highlighted, along with their main stops on the continent. Ahoy, Neighbor! Moore-McCormack's flagships were called 'the Good Neighbor Fleet,' a name which borrowed from Franklin Delano Roosevelt's 'Good Neighbor' policy towards South America. This policy aimed to allay fears in Latin America of U.S. military interventions, which were frequent in the preceding decades, and instead promote respect for sovereignty and economic ties between American countries. Not only did Moore-McCormack borrow the phrase from the Roosevelt Administration, but their entire operation was supported by the United States Maritime Commission, including the refurbishment of three ships from the recently closed Panama Pacific Line. Publication History and Census This map was created by Ernest Dudley Chase and published in 1942 by Rand McNally for Moore-McCormack Lines. It is nearly identical to another map published the same year by the same artist and publisher titled 'The Good Neighbor Pictorial Map of South America' (Rumsey 8596.000. OCLC 1110127334), the only difference between the two being the title. In either case, the map is fairly scarce, with the printing with the present title being held by Stanford University, the Newberry Library, the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and the University of Southern Maine. In den WarenkorbVery good. Light wear along original fold lines. Verso repairs to fold separations at 2 fold intersections. Slight loss at 2 fold intersections. The Victory War Map on verso. Size 15 x 35.5 Inches. This is a 1943 Ernest Dudley Chase pictorial map of the world during World War II (1939 - 1945). It is one of a series of maps Chase produced to illustrate the war as it developed. A Closer Look The map depicts the world with political boundaries predating the war. Approximate distances between New York and points worldwide, such as Sydney, Melbourne, Manila, and Bombay, are provided. Symbols mark global naval bases and possessions of the British, Americans, Japanese, French, and Dutch. Illustrations of submarines, battleships, and even an ocean liner fill the seas while American fighter and bomber aircraft patrol the skies. Vignettes appear along the top and bottom borders and illustrate a tank, artillery pieces, a B-17 Flying Fortress, and anti-aircraft gun mounts aboard a Navy ship. Morse Code for the letter 'V' (for 'Victory') of three dots and a dash create the border. The Verso: The Victory War Map The Victory War Map occupies over half of the verso and depicts from southern Scandinavia to central Africa and from the Atlantic Ocean to India. Anchors mark naval bases. Cities are labeled throughout, with small crosses marking capitals. Railroads wind across Europe and Asia into the Indian Subcontinent. Very few railroads are illustrated in Africa. Insignia of the U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Corps appear on the border. Two smaller maps appear to the right. One illustrates the northern coast of continental Europe from Brittany to the Jutland Peninsula. This vast region was presumed to be the theater of the expected Allied invasion of continental Europe, but no one knew exactly where or when that would occur. The other smaller map focuses on Italy, Sicily, the Adriatic Sea, and the Balkans. The Allies invaded Italy in the fall of 1943, which made this region's geography of even greater interest to Chase's audience. Publication History and Census This map was created and published by Ernest Dudley Chase in 1943 with the 1942 'Total War Battle Map' on the recto. We note an example of the present map in the David Rumsey Map Collection. One example is cataloged in OCLC, which is part of the collection at the National Library of Australia.
