Hardcover. Small 4to. Quarter calf with gilt spine lettering and tan patterned paper over boards. xiii, 499pp, (1p), (6pp ads). Hand-colored aquatint frontispiece, engraved title page with hand-colored vignette, all called-for full-page aquatint plates (each hand colored), map, in-text vignette. Very good overall. Calf spine is rough about the edges, with hinges holding but a tad delicate, while boards are edgeworn; text block is tight throughout, with many pages moderately age toned and a bit soiled and others pristinely white; leaf vii-viii inset. Scarce first edition of this soup-to-nuts commentary, critique and Eastern seaboard travelogue of a long-term English resident, whom Howes tactfully observes offers a "Petulant view of U.S. life." But Janson's preface makes clear he has a chip on his shoulder and an axe to grind: "The rooted aversion in the hearts f the Americans against the inhabitants of Britain, was to the author a source of perpetual uneasiness, he was regarded as proud and haughty; while a distant kind of envious obsequiousness, tinctured with an affectation of superiority, was but too evident in the majority of his equals. Such being the case, it cannot be surprising that he was never so happy as to form a true friendship with an American." The aquatint plates are age toned to varying degrees, but all are the seldom-seen hand-colored variety. As is well known, the title page vignette represents the earliest image of the White House, and the plate featuring Mount Vernon one of the earliest images of Washington's residence. ABBEY 648. CLARK II, 99. FEDERAL HUNDRED 100. HOWES J 59. SABIN 35770.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. London: Albion Press, for James Cundee, 1807. First edition. Quarto (11 ¼" x 8 ¾"; 285mm x 220mm). With 9 hand-colored aquatint plates. Engraved additional title with hand-colored vignette and frontisepiece. Plan of Philadelphia. Bound in original blue paper boards with paper label to the spine. Housed in a green cloth slipcase and chemise with brown moroco spine. Uncut. Edges worn and boards stained. Foxing, staining and off-setting throughout. Spine partly detached. Charles William Janson was an Englishman who lived in America from 1793-1805. Upon returning to England, he wrote a book very critical of the United States. He covers a broad array of topics including bear attacks and bees. The title page is the earliest known published image of the White House, and the view of Mount Vernon is also very early. There is a manuscript ownership of Mary Anne Theresa Whitby (1783-1850) to the title page. She was an English scientist, writer, and artist, the daughter of Royal Naval Officer Captain Thomas Symonds. In the 1840s, she became an authority on silkworms and devloped a friendship with Charles Darwin, who she met at the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Sabin 35770.

Additional engraved title-page with hand-coloured aquatint vignette, frontispiece, plan of Philadelphia, tail-piece vignette, and 8 hand-coloured aquatint plates by M. Marigot (short marginal tears and repairs not affecting the images, a bit browned). Original blue paper boards, uncut (covers detached, extremities worn with minor loss). Provenance: from the library of Jacques Levy, his sale, Sotheby's, 20th April 2012, lot 340 "OUR ONCE TRANS-ATLANTIC BRETHEREN, BUT NOW THE ONLY REMAINING REPUBLICANS IN THE CIVILISED WORLD" (Preface) First edition. "This large and most ill-arranged volume contains, apparently, whatever Mr. Janson could recollect of America, aiding his memory by a few notes and memorandums. He went to America with high expectations, engaged in several speculations, all of which failed, and after thirteen years' absence, returned to England, where, as many others have done since, he vented his spleen in writing a book" (Sabin recording the Monthly Review, LIII. 443). The beautiful plates include images of Mount Vernon, the Bank of the United States, Boston, and Philadelphia. Abbey Travel 648; Sabin 35770. Catalogued by Kate Hunter.
