As issued --- Beautifully fresh copy, uncut, of this uncommon account of the ongoing Russo-Turkish war in Europe. Published one year after the very rare first, this second edition is enlarged with 'diverses observations sur les grandes actions qui se sont passées dans la dernière guerre d'Hongrie & dans la présente en Moldavie'. It covers in great details and acute observations the Turkish and Russian military capacities, together with their respective allies. This particular Russo-Turkish war broke out in 1768 due to tensions within Poland, where the throne was occupied by King Stanislaus Agustus Poniatowski, a former favorite of Empress Catherine II; and the power behind it effectively held by the Russian ambassador Nikolai Repnin and the Russian army. The war resulted in 1774 with a decisive Russian victory that brought Southern Ukraine, Northern Caucasus and Crimea within the orbit of the Russian Empire. Warnery (1719/2086) was a Swiss born General of Hussars, Royal Prussian Colonel, Polish Major General and military theorist - also in the service of the Tsar, hence the pro-Russian bias of his writing. First English edition. - Born in Switzerland, Warnery participated in more than a dozen campaigns, serving in Sardinia, Austria, and Russia between 1733 and 1745. He subsequently moved to Silesia and served with distinction as an officer in the Prussian Hussars until 1758. From 1766 onwards he was in Polish services as adjutant to Stanislaw August Poniatowski and military advisor to Prince Adam Kazimierz Czartoryski, becoming the very model of a modern major general around 1770: he was a prolific writer on military matters, offering commentaries on the campaigns of classical antiquity, polemical responses to the works of Folard, Guibert, Turpin, and Lloyd, an account of the Seven Years' War, and analyses of the Russian and Turkish armies. The present work is probably his best known. - This English translation was carried out by George Frederick Koehler, a highly talented artillery officer who served at the siege of Gibraltar, commanded the army of the Belgian Republic in 1790, and headed a military mission to Turkey during the Egyptian Campaign. The lively illustrations are based on Koehler's own "hasty sketches". - Plates rather spotty. This is the first work of the Swiss-born De Warnery (1720-86), published in a German translation as early as 1766 (purportedly against his own wishes): according to the author, never one to eschew self-aggrandizement, he was the first to "unmask the Turks" and show that they did not warrant the fear with which they were usually viewed (cf. ADB XLI, 176). The plates show suggestions for battle arrays. - Unobtrusive repairs to lower cover of the appealing binding. Variously browned and brownstained due to paper. Rare.
