Both items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Purdie's letter: 4pp., 4to. Closely and neatly written on a bifolium, with the last page cross-written over the third. Addressed, with postmarks and red wax seal, to 'G. P. Nicholson Esqre. | Wath | nr Rotherham'. Purdie is strongly critical of Sanderson, as he indicates at the beginning of the letter: 'I have long been convinced that the opposite party never intended and never will return me a shilling of my money, unless compelled to do so, [.] I feel however often so irritated and indignant at the heartless robbery that has been practised upon me, that were it not for the unpleasant consequences it might entail upon my own family, I believe I could scarcely resist the strong impulse I have to take the Law into my own hands, and inflict summary punishment upon the Scoundrel.' He proceeds to describe the financial position since his leaving Swinton, including the following: 'There was about £100 due to me upon the Sale of the new Steam Engine, which ought to have been paid down at once, and I cannot see upon what plea they can attempt to retain that money, which ought to be seen about directly, or it may be swallowed up like the rest'. The letter continues in the same vein. Forster's receipt: 1p., 4to. Reads: 'Mr Charles Sanderson | Sir | We are favoured with your remittance of £5. 9. 6 which settles for the Pig Iron. | We are now making Iron of entirely different quality; it is esteemed by Staffordshire Manufacturers equal to Forrest of Dean Pig.'.

Ref.: Watry B29 Condition: Covers slightly soiled and browned, spine browned, slightly rubbed to extremities. Internally, some browning to endpapers, with occasional light foxing, mainly to foot, but generally bright and clean. A good+ copy.

Very good, spine slightly faded, upper joint weak at tail, top corner of upper cover bumped, foredge lightly spotted, but otherwise bright, clean and presentable. .

Description: Half printed paper with 'wild rose' design in green and pink. Printed label on spine. Octavo: 20 × 13 cm; pp. [4] blank, [31], [5] blank. Printed from 'Vale' type in black and red on Arnold's unbleached hand-made paper with Vale watermark. Paragraph marks designed by Pissaro and engraved by Ricketts. With 'Vale' monogram in red on p. 1. Provenance: Bookplate of Jean Grès on the front pastedown. The woodcut (12 × 10 cm), dated 1928, was cut by the artist Robert Lanz (Paris, 1896 - Geneva, 1965). Ref.: Ricketts p. 23; Watry B16 Condition: Boards slightly rubbed and stained. Label on spine with losses. Front and rear flyleaves slightly browned. A browned area on pages 30-31, probably caused by a paper bookmark. Otherwise internally in very good condition. Despite the somewhat modest condition of the bindings, still a very well preserved copy.

Full page floral border, one large initials and 5 woodcut illustrations by Charles Ricketts. One of 310 copies on handmade paper. Printed in Vale type on heavy paper with a watermark of engraving tools and wreaths. Pp.30. Tal 4to, original linen backed blue paper covered boards with printed paper label on upper cover, largely unopened. Slight darkening to spine and bumping to corners, rubbing to edges of the boards, some browning and spotting to first and last few leaves, particularly to endpapers and edges. One of Ricketts's most powerful books, the woodcuts being among his best illustrations. A design for one of the woodcuts was reproduced in 'The Pageant' and another in 'The Dial'. With the signature of Charels Ricketts in pencil on the front free endpaper.
