This is a Very Good Three Volumes Of Five Volume Set,with these for sale being Volumes One,Two and Three,includes 2 large folding coloured maps in First and Second Vols.In reddish/brown Buckram with gilt title lettering to spines.This is the true first edition 1906-1908.It's not an ex- library example,and has ownership inscriptions to the front pastedowns of the three volumes.Some dulling to spines,with a few marks to outer cloth,with particular scuffing to edge of spine on Volume two.Corners are lightly bumped.These three volumes have a total of 2 maps and 197 wonderful monochrome plares all with tissue guards.Plates are by Lilian Medland well known for her ornithological paintings.Bindings are firm with no hinge weakness.Top edges are in gilt,with others edges uncut.Half Title are present,with red and black title lettering to Title Page.Large foloio's 10'' by 13'' so extra carriage charge will apply.Large Folios Three Volumes (I,II & III) of Five Volume Set Vol 157pp Vol 2 164pp,Vol 187pp First Editions 1906-1908 Size: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.

Laid in is a beautifully penned letter from Thomas Denman presenting this book to a Mrs. Stannus (?): "I remember well how kind and helpful you always were when we met in those trying days of the War." On the half-title page there is another beautiful penned note from Denman, dated 9 Dec. 1930, explaining that at the end of the book "is a short account written by myself of the 2nd Line Regiment." Denman was a British aristocrat and politician who briefly commanded--as captain and then major--the Middlesex (Duke of Cambridge's Hussars) Imperial Yeomanry. Includes beautiful color plates, black-and-white photos, and two folding maps. 8vo. 241 pp. including index. From the estate of Donald G. Skinner, Canadian military collector extraordinaire.

Medland, a nurse and illustrator who drew pictures predominantly for works on birds, including those by Gregory Mathews and her husband Tom Iredale.Originally published in twenty monthly parts, this is the first edition in book form.This is a lovely set, containing information on a range of birds found within the 'British Islands', including the Marsh-Harrier, Common Buzzard, Golden Eagle, Merlin, Mute Swan, and Wigeon. A wonderful ornithological guide to the British Isles. In half morocco bindings, with cloth covered boards. Fading to back strips, with rubbing to back strip heads and tails, joints and board perimeters. Front joints of each volume starting, with boards holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Title pages printed in red and black. With the subscribers list. A near-fine set, with the usual minor spotting confined mostly to the outer edges of the margins. The bindings with some slight rubbing and sunning to the spines. A very heavy set that will require extra postage.

Large quarto,five volumes,318 uncoloured plates by Lillian Medland. Publisher's cloth, top edge gilt, a few flecks, internally some light spotting. Lilian Medland married Tom Iredale and illustrated his Birds of Paradise and Bower Birds 1953 and Birds of New Guinea, 1956.
