Voici ce que Mennessier de La Lance nous dit de l'ouvrage : « C'est l'un des ouvrages les plus importants de Raabe. Il avait la dent cruelle, et sa critique du Cours du Comte d'Aure (1799-1863) est loin d'être anodine. Le Comte d'Aure fut furieux et répondit de la bonne encre, mais Raabe montra que cette réponse avait paru avant la publication de son livre. Quant au ministre, il soutint le Comte d'Aure, qualifia de pamphlet le livre de Raabe et mit celui-ci aux arrêts pendant que l'Empereur, auquel Raabe avait envoyé son ouvrage, lui adressait ses remerciements et lui annonçait qu'il en avait ordonné le dépôt dans sa bibliothèque particulière ! On pense bien que Raabe ne laissa pas tomber dans l'eau ce plaisant incident et il l'a plus d'une fois rappelé ensuite. C'est aussi dans ce livre qu'il exécute Casimir Noël, ses freins régulateurs et, du même coup, Montigny qui les avait imprudemment approuvés. Enfin, c'est également là qu'on trouvera le début de ses études sur le mécanisme des allures. » Le traité est illustré de trois grandes planches repliées et notre exemplaire contient en sus un feuillet manuscrit collé au revers de la page de titre ainsi qu'une coupure de presse (critique de l'ouvrage) collée sur un feuillet inséré dans la reliure. Extremely scarce first edition, issued in two volumes over three years. Traité d'équitation de haute école is Barroil's systematic guide to haute école riding, drawing on his experience as an écuyer and disciple of Charles Raabe. It provides detailed instruction and advanced methods for the training of both horse and rider, and is regarded as a work of primary importance in late 19th-century equestrian literature. Barroil was one of the first French equestrian authors to systematically incorporate photographic motion studies (Muybridge, Marey, and Delton) into the analysis of gaits; earlier haute école manuals relied largely on observation and tradition, whereas here diagrams and photographic sequences provide measurable, verifiable timing of hoof placement and stride phases. Volume I's biomechanical analysis is directly applied in Volume II to a progressive training programme, from in-hand flexions to airs de manège, making the work both a scientific study and a practical manual. Although Raabe had taught his "six periods" theory of hoof movement, Barroil's treatise offered one of its most complete printed expositions, preserving a key strand of bauchériste thought.
