Zustand sehr gut Die teils präzise ausgearbeiteten, teils skizzenartigen Zeichnungen von Charles Avery bewegen sich spielerisch zwischen Realität und Fiktion. Seit Ende der 1990er Jahre entstehen unzählige Zeichnungen, die thematisch in Serien gegliedert sind. Seit 2004 verdichtet sich Averys Zeichenkosmos in dem epischen Projekt The Islanders, als erster Band einer von Avery geplanten Buchreihe 2008 veröffentlicht. In der Darstellung einer fiktiven Inselgruppe vermischt sich Inselromantik mit Endzeitvorstellungen. Alte Mythen von Drachen, Gnomen und mutierten Wesen integrieren sich in die Alltagsdarstellungen einer Inselwelt, in der das Vertraute und Groteske, das Magische und Absonderliche eine spannungsvolle Allianz eingehen. Als zweiter Teil von The Islanders erscheint nun dieses Künstlerbuch. Im Zentrum steht die überdimensionale Bleistift- und Tuschezeichnung View of the Port at Onomatopoeia (2010), eine Charakterisierung des Hafens der Hauptstadt der fiktiven Inselgruppe namens Onomatopoeia ("Lautmalerei"). ***** Charles Avery has created an extraordinary and epic piece of artistic work, in which large format drawings and sculptures connect with and complement one another within a fictional narrative structure.
