Zustand: sehr guter Zustand. sehr guter Zustand, geringe Gebrauchs- und Alterungsspuren: Umschlag teils etwas vergilbt - Seiten sauber und ordentlich Ausstellungskatalog "Force a été de constater lors des trois «Salons de la jeune gravure suisse» qui ont eu lieu à Genève en 1967, 1969 et 1971, que dans l'art de la gravure, comme… dans tous les arts, l'aspect technique ne pouvait plus être envisagé ni traité selon la tradition et qu'on assistait sur ce plan, parallèlement à d'autres d'ailleurs, à un éclatement. Aussi a-t-il été décidé de poser plus largement le problème nouveau de la relation entre une image donnée et le moyen qui la reproduit; loin de l'idée d'éliminer pour autant les oeuvres réalisées selon les techniques dites orthodoxes. Cela nous a entraînés, pour ne plus prêter à confusion, à changer le titre de ces manifestations qui s'appellent dorénavant «Biennales suisses de l'image multipliée». Par là même on coupait court aux critiques pointilleuses des puristes de l'estampe qui ont reproché aux jurés chargés de la sélection des oeuvres d'avoir accepté (et d'avoir primé) des techniques « bâtardes » telles que la lithographie et la sérigraphie et, bien pire (!), l'impression offset et la photographie. Les conditions mêmes de la Biennale, permettant en effet à tout participant d'envoyer aussi bien une eau-forte traditionnelle qu'une page détachée d'un journal quotidien, mettaient non seulement très directement en cause le statut de l'oeuvre d'art, défini par sa matérialité et son contenu idéologique, mais encore, et bien plus, le statut de l'artiste dont la démarche créative se mue en manipulations techniques voire en «simples» opérations ou interventions sélectives et indicatrices dans le donné visuel. Si le regard a de tout temps étroitement participé à la création plastique, ici ce regard pouvait devenir la création elle-même. Ce faisant, l'on évacuait deux données fondamentales de l'art occidental: d'une part le métier, au sens de capacité de restitution visuelle, et donc le fait plastique dont la primauté sur le contenu narratif s'est de plus en plus établie, et d'autre part l'affirmation individuelle de l'artiste en tant que seul démiurge possible d'un univers déterminé ." Presentation inscription by the editor and publisher, Dr. Amos Lawrence Mason of Harvard University, on the front free endpaper. With a clipped signature of Admiral Steedman loosely laid-in ahead of the title page. (Dr. Mason was Admiral Steedman's son-in-law.) (Connor & Faulk 607). Rear Admiral Charles Steedman (1811-1890) had a long naval career, first entering the U.S. Navy in 1828. He participated in the Mexican War, spent time at the Naval Observatory in Washington and saw service in the Civil War. During the Civil War, he initially worked in the Chesapeake Bay area, transporting troops between Havre de Grace and Annapolis. He was later given command of the Bienville and participated in the attack and capture of Port Royal in 1861, and then enforced the naval blockade of Georgia and Florida. Following the war, Steedman was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1871, and he retired in 1873. Limited edition of Memoir and Correspondence of Charles Steedman Rear Admiral, United States Navy, with a presentation inscription by the editor, Amos Lawrence Mason, and a laid-in signature of Admiral Steedman.
